For me I see it very unlikely the PS5 will sell less than 8m

Even if it experienced the same decline PS4 experienced, it would look something like this PS3 10.4m > PS4 9.5m > PS5 8m

The only thing stopping it from currently eclipsing PS4 sales at the same point in its life is the shortages and where that is concerned its actually down globablly way more than it is in Japan, meaning we shouldn't expect Japan to be hit worst by shortages going forward compared to other regions. Since sony is expecting a 40% increase in production this fiscal year I'm not expecting Japan to be left out of those increased shipments. There will of course be some dreadful weeks, but that is inconsequential in the bigger context.

Beyond that, I thought everyone had the belief that Japanese demand was being prepped up by international scalpers? Just another reason why it extremely unlikely retail figures for Japan will sit below 8m when all is said and done. Demand in surrouinding countries will continue to impact Japanese sales of hardware.

It depends how long sony continue to produce ps5 after ps6 releases. Ps3 sold 1 million more in japan because it continued selling for 3 years after the ps4 released. It was also $100. Sony ceased production of almost all Ps4 model right after ps5 released and didn't have any price cuts for years

When you selectively quote a troll post, it almost looks like it was trying to make an actual point.

you gotta make it more obvious these days. IF the OLED wasn't supply constrained this week it would have outsold the PS5 300:1

The post fell flat; this tomato is rotten, well past its prime.

I think part of the reason the PS3 kept selling "well" in Japan after PS4 came out was a lot of Japanese games still kept coming to the system. Some of which weren't even on the PS4. Because of this if you didn't have a PS3 or PS4 it was cheaper to just get a PS3 and it had a big library to choose from, whereas the PS4 was just getting started. If the PS4 had backwards compatibility it would have helped to bring more people over, but that wasn't the case.
I'll list a few examples of big releases in Japan that came out on PS3 while the PS4 was out.

Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel 2, Atelier Sophie, Tales of Berseria, Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Dragon Quest Builders, Dragon Quest Heroes 2, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Metal Gear Solid 5, Attack on Titan, and Yakuza 0.

The PS3 sold 575k units since the PS4 released and half of that was in 2014.

He was rounding up.

That's weird. Ps3 sold 300k in first half of 2014 https://www.destructoid.com/japan-the-ps3-is-beating-the-wii-u-in-sales-in-2014/

This is according to Famitsu. Media Create has the PS3 ending up at 10.469mil while Famitsu has it ending up at 10.274mil.

Famitsu had the PS3 at 129k YTD when the PS4 released in week 8 2014 and it ended up at 450k in week 52 2014. That's 321k in 2014 after the PS4 released. It sold an aditional 256k after 2014 according to Famitsu which adds up to 577k PS3 sold after the PS4 released.

I advise you not to mix Famitsu and Media Create data.

Didn't know famitsu was so different. Was trying to look for some ps3 sales after the ps4 released and that's what I saw

What is this?

PS3 hardware sales when PS4 launched: 9,698,326

PS3 hardware sales at the end of 2014: 10,018,534

Final PS3 hardware sales at the end of 2017: 10,274,113

Yeah I didn't know their final total is different. I thought it would be 10.5m like everyone were saying

The likes of Kirby, Switch Sports, and soon MH Sunbreak and Xenoblade 3 should hold down the fort until Splatoon 3 arrives; that's when things will get really interesting.
