Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch Nears 100M, PS5 Tops 16M - Global Hardware Dec 4 to 11

Correct me if I'm wrong but when the Switch hits 100m that would make it the fastest platform to reach the milestone as it would have done it in under 5 years (roughly about 4 years and 9 months), PS4 is the current fastest at 5 years and 7 months from what I can find.

As Kakadu18 said, DS is faster.

Here's how long it took every console to get to 100m (including Switch already).

DS = 232 Weeks
Switch = 251 Weeks
PS2 = 300 Weeks (Shipped)
PS4 = 305 Weeks
Wii = 367 Weeks
PS1 = Roughly 500 Weeks (Shipped)
Gameboy = Roughly 580 Weeks (Shipped)

Xbox Series X/S has outsold the Game Gear (10.62m according to VGChartz).

The next target is the Wii U at 13.97 million.

The DS did it faster.

Sure, but the DS was roughly $150 (depending on model and year it was lower and higher I think), which adjusted for inflation is $221 today. So the DS was a decently cheaper console. Plus, the games sold adjusted for inflation at $44-51 each, so $9-16 cheaper. Both of these price points factor into people buying into a system, not just the hardware alone, as people will think in the future.

What the Switch has done selling at mainly $300 with $60 first party games is much more impressive than the DS in that time frame.

Have we had the obligatory annual "Switch will fall off a cliff next year" post yet?

Like a PS4 or Wii-level cliff? I highly doubt it. But 2022 will absolutely be less sales than this year, which will be less than 2020. 2020 was the peak, and we are on the downward slope now. It will end up with elite lifetime sales, but I don't think it will ever top 2020.

A successful system in year 5 being passed its peak is pretty normal though, and being passed its peak doesn't mean it's going to suddenly crash dive like people have consistently predicted for the last 4 years.

Pretty sure PS4 is faster than PS2.

That's because PS2 is (shipped) I used sell-through for the ones with it available.

Poor Wii. It could’ve, should’ve, done this like a 100 weeks faster, but, yeah.
