Kinda surprised this one hasn't been guessed yet. It's usually on the first few hints that somebody figures it out.

#2

-Every 108 years the soul of the god of destruction possesses a child in an attempt to return to its body

-And every 108 years for the last 10,000 years a winged black monster has appeared to kill the child to prevent the resurrection of the god of destruction

-Both the current Child of Light and the black monster that keeps killing them turn out to be members of your party, the child having survived because the monster mistook her twin sister for Child of Light when they were still babies

-A JRPG on the PS1 developed by Sony that has garnered a cult following in the years since

That's the one.

No takers so far for my TOP 3, so give it another hint:

Yes, We were naughty. Completely naughty.
So many there used to be, almost a nuisance.
Pee-wee Prince.
Roll up stars.

#2: Dragon Quest Builders 2 guessed by UnderwaterFunktown
Your character always carries a big book on his or her back, opening it in key moments to read and write in.
High-five your companion on successes.
Second entry in this blocky spin-off from an old japanese RPG-series.

#1: Heroes of Might and Magic III guessed by UnderwaterFunktown
This third installment of a spin-off series features the Grail for the first time.
War in Erathia.
Let your heroes control big armies of fantasy warriors and monsters.

I've been gone too long from this thread.

I don't have any clues, but wanted to take some time to highlight two games never-before-seen on my list: Super Mario 3D World and Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

I played both for the first time this year: Ori at launch on Game Pass and SM3D World on WiiU (7 years late )

Anyway, I adore both. I was a little skeptical about 3D World, since 3D Land has always been toward the back end of my favorite 3D Mario games. But it's absolutely amazing. Great graphics and sound, and super creative levels, mechanics, and platforming conceits. I think it can go toe-to-toe with games like Galaxy.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps, meanwhile, is a masterpiece. Right now, it's the only Metroidvania I believe can compete with Super Metroid. I would have ranked it higher, but it suffered from some pretty glaring technical issues at launch. I look forward to playing it again post-patch and re-evaluating it.

Hopefully I can play more "heavyweight" games in 2021 and add some fresh titles to the list. It's been a little stagnant...

There's another but you refuse to play it!

2) Dragon Quest Builders 2?

Obviously. Any guesses for the other two?

Adding to the top 3:

3) It's not Star Wars, but it does have both space and opera.

Both towards the end of the game.

2) "Like fools we clung to the old hatreds"

"Until the day the sky rained fire..."

1) Exactly what you'd expect.

Not because it's a common pick, but to those who have played the game and/or take a look at my list so far, it should come as no suprise.

No not really unfortunately. Think I would have guessed them by now if I knew them.

Edit: Wait a sec, number 1 is Heroes of Might and Magic 3, right? Never played it, but just got the "heroes" part of the third hint.

2) Divinity: Original Sin 2

I tried playing Baldur's Gate and its sequel a few years ago, but by that time they were too dated and clunky to be enjoyable. Playing DOS2 now is how I imagine playing BG2 felt back then. This game is just absolutely head and shoulders above any other top-down RPG released in the last decade. It has an amazingly deep backstory, hugely compelling characters and an enormous game world in which to explore and adventure. It's not the sharpest looking game, but makes up for it with some gorgeous visual design and a brilliant soundtrack. But where this game really shines is in its combat and interactivity. The system just works - every character feels powerful in their own way, and the synergy when you get them working together effectively is incredible. The environment plays a major role in every battle and ensures that no two battles are ever the same. By the end of the game each of your characters wields extraordinary power, and fires it at equally powerful enemies in a series of epic combat sequences. The best thing about DOS2 is how logical it is: if you see a problem in front of you and think rationally through how to solve it, you're often amazed to find that the designers have actually accounted for your strategy and made it work (or explain why it doesn't). I've never seen this kind of thing in any game before or since, and it's the aspect of the game most responsible for placing DOS2 this high up my list.
