Switch doing valiantly in the face of stock shortages. It'd be nice to see how it'd sell without them.

Holy shit at PS4, those are deathbed numbers. And just a week ago I said 6k was bleak.

Switch could possibly due a couple of weeks at 100k and then level out around 65k for a period if shortages were sorted.

I think it can reach 5.5 million if stock is there and if they have a good holiday line-up and/or price cut.

Switch: 21

PS4: 8

Slow week, but I guess expected for May. Really impressive AC:NH continues to sell in droves, even though it’s slowing down. Switch continues to sell well despite supply constraints. It’s too bad the PS4 went back to Earth not too long after FFVIIR released.

I am curious to see how the PS5 will fare in Japan. The PS4 basically had everything that the Switch does not (I.e., A-AAA third party support, power, etc.) and released way before the Switch. Not to mention that despite the 3DS’ success in Japan, mobile took over. Nevertheless, the Switch was able to take Japan by storm and not only reach 10 million before the PS4, but create a ~4 million lead over the PS4 in such a short time. What can the PS5 do to compete in Japan, beyond what it will likely have over the Switch besides price and portability? It will likely have the Japanese support that Nintendo would have to suck )&@$ just to have the Switch be considered worth porting to (which is already the case with the PS4 support majority of the time). It’ll be interesting to say the least.

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizon is already close to 50% of the sales of the Top 10 PS4 games.
  • While Nintendo just in 2020 as a publisher has sold over 80% of the lifetime sales of the Top 10 PS4 games.
  • Support continues to be laughable for Major Japanese 3rd Parties
  • Smaller publishers are selling a ton at the eShop
  • There is a fair few games that could be refered as evergreens on the eShop(Fitness Boxing, Human Fall Flat, Overcooked 2)
  • Human Fall Flat(28.12.2017) and Overcooked 2(07.8.2018) have barely left the Top 20 eShop since they released
  • Fitness Boxing is at 108.688 physical, it likely has at least as many digital sales.
  • I think while Major Japanese 3rd Parties are losing ground to indie developers and smaller publishers in Japan
  • If they can't bother to constantly release AA games for the Switch they should think about investing in overseas indie developers they can publish in Japan for the Switch

I think we will continue to see the disappearance of console sales in Japan. PS4 was lucky to not have a hybrid like Switch out for the first few years on the market. Sure there was 3DS but back then portable and console were two different things. With the invention of the Switch that is no longer the case. Japan will likely essentially become Nintendo land from here on out. PS3 sold like 10.8 million, PS4 will probably end up right at 10 million. PS5 I think might hit like 8 million lifetime as the Switch, and later Switch 2, continue to take over Japan.

Yeah I definitely expect PS5 to sell less than PS4 in Japan, console sales have been in decline there for some time I don't really see what PS5 could do to reverse that.

It's true that the Switch is selling well, but more than that, it's become the norm to play games on smartphones in Japan. People aren't interested in AAA titles.
I'd like to see more Japanese publishers release more games, but most publishers are focusing on mobile because genres like JRPGs make easy money on the root box. Everyone is always talking about the root box and I'm sick of it.
Most of the core gamers who are interested in the PS5 also have a PC, so it's going to be tough to compete.

Root box? What is that?
