Slow week, but I guess expected for May. Really impressive AC:NH continues to sell in droves, even though it’s slowing down. Switch continues to sell well despite supply constraints. It’s too bad the PS4 went back to Earth not too long after FFVIIR released.

I am curious to see how the PS5 will fare in Japan. The PS4 basically had everything that the Switch does not (I.e., A-AAA third party support, power, etc.) and released way before the Switch. Not to mention that despite the 3DS’ success in Japan, mobile took over. Nevertheless, the Switch was able to take Japan by storm and not only reach 10 million before the PS4, but create a ~4 million lead over the PS4 in such a short time. What can the PS5 do to compete in Japan, beyond what it will likely have over the Switch besides price and portability? It will likely have the Japanese support that Nintendo would have to suck )&@$ just to have the Switch be considered worth porting to (which is already the case with the PS4 support majority of the time). It’ll be interesting to say the least.

I think we will continue to see the disappearance of console sales in Japan. PS4 was lucky to not have a hybrid like Switch out for the first few years on the market. Sure there was 3DS but back then portable and console were two different things. With the invention of the Switch that is no longer the case. Japan will likely essentially become Nintendo land from here on out. PS3 sold like 10.8 million, PS4 will probably end up right at 10 million. PS5 I think might hit like 8 million lifetime as the Switch, and later Switch 2, continue to take over Japan.
