Forums - Gaming - Can we talk about The Wonderful 101 laughable Demaster?

Maybe other people are just better at being objective than me, but I cannot define what is objectively great. I can recognize if a game is regarded as great. I can recognize that a game may have qualities that the public at large seems to think are great. But, I don't see how anyone can define something as objectively great. Objectively great would mean we'd have to have some way to determine its greatness completely independent of human analysis.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but it is very much a thing. I enjoyed FFXIII but still acknowledge the game is not very good apart from it's presentation. Conversely, I didn't like Mario Galaxy but wont deny it's quality.

You forgot to mention that anyone can claim XIII is great and Galaxy not so much. You're confusing your ability to distinguish your preference for things despite their apparent quality you perceive on them with the real quality of those things, which is not set on stone and is taken differently by each person.

I'm not confused at all. You wanna believe there's no such thing as objective quality, go right ahead, no skin off my bones!

I liked W101 but not enough to wanna buy it again, so I was never really interested in it's "remaster". Seeing there being virtually no improvement makes that decision easier. I do wonder why it is they remade this of all games. Clearly wasn't a passion project with the minimal effort, and if they just wanted a quick buck there are surely way safer bets than W101.

Its a port and I'm actually not sure platinum games has any original IPs outside of this title that haven't already hit one of the current platforms. Most of their releases are licensed.

I think its both a quick buck but also seeing if there's enough interest to warrant a sequel.

Astral Chain

Astral Chain is on Switch and is published by Nintendo. Pretty sure there is a deal which ties it to that platform (for now), otherwise it would be multiplat.

Sorry I misread thought you meant there has not been a new IP since W101. In anycase. W101 is still co-owned by Nintendo. This was a special case of sure but do it yourself thing.

Honestly its quite intriguing, Ninetendo published or joint published the Wii U version but I don't think Nintendo have any ownership over the IP or game itself otherwise I simply couldn't see it being on PS4 & PC.

Maybe thats why its pegged as "Remaster" as oppose to a port. Its technically a separate game maybe.

Just go back and read up on it. Nintendo still co-owns it. Thing is it lost money on Wii U. It was a failure. Platinum wanted to bring it to Switch and other platforms. Nintendo would not pay for it. Gave them the go-ahead but they would have to find the funding themselves. If Platinum outright owned it. They would just say it. Instead, they keep thanking Nintendo for being so kind to them about this. Now, this part I will speculate but it makes a ton of sense. While Nintendo didn't want to dump more money into W101 because they lost big last time. They value Platinum as a partner and did this to keep good relations. Not that unheard of. Just don't count on it happening again anytime soon. Hell, I remember when SEGA allowed one of their IPs on a competing console in the 16-bit era.

Nintendo were willing to pay for the Switch port I believe, but it would have to be an exclusive.

Credits start at 23:14. I can't find any reference to Nintendo in the credits of the remaster. Platinum might have bought the IP after all. Or maybe they made a deal with Nintendo. The Wonderful 101 ownership... for something else. Maybe Nintendo has secured another exclusive title from Platinum...

If that had been the case, then we would have seen a Switch-exclusive port of the game. I am sure that Nintendo didn't want to finance such a port.

What I am not sure about are the legal rights to the IP. In none of their interviews did Platinum give an outright clear answer if IP ownership had changed for The Wonderful 101. The current ports should provide such an answer though, because copyrights are usually displayed in some spots of the game, be it the title screen or the credits.

Well they financed the port of Tokyo Mirage Session, so why not TW101?
