When you think about it, the specs don't really matter. It comes down to the ambitions of the game developers/directors and how much they're willing to spend and how far they want to push the system and their visions. Looks at games like shadow of colossus on ps2, or they remaster, games of such scale, we don't get much of. We haven't even seen examples of next gen features that could only be done on next gen, except abit of ray tracing, but nothing on physics, AI. Regardless, sony has the advantage when it comes to exclusives. Microsoft need to do a lot more to convince everyone they can be as good if not better, regardless of teraflops.

"Digital Foundry didn't disagree on Mark Cerny."

They didn't outright agree with him either. And they even said "We will have to wait to see how this translates into real world scenarios"
Besides, even if they had agreed with them, we have already seen these scenerarios MULTIPLE times. In every single Graphics Card generation before. Did you take the time to look at the chart above?

And there was one particular comment they did that people either missed or chose to ignore: " It's a fascinating idea - and entirely at odds with Microsoft's design decisions for Xbox Series X - and what this likely means is that developers will need to be mindful of potential power consumption spikes that could impact clocks and lower performance."

"Also what reason would Sony have to choose less CUs with higher frequency (and much higher than what could be expected, and one that makes dies harder to make and cooling also harder to achieve)? Just for the giggles?"

Errr... because at the moment of designing the console they did not know how many CUs and what Clock speed MS was going to use? You know that they dont meet in the same room to design these things, right?

They did know that microsoft was going to have more than 36. The guys at sony aren't dumb. They can get an idea what the other can achieve under a certain budget and whats possible at the time, with discussions with engineers and so, and have a few scenarios to work with. Cerny said they could have went for "more" compute units, but chose for the better ssd and io chip and such, after their feedback from developers.

Seven years ago, development of the PS5 started. Five years ago, the principle setup was decided: Lower cu count, higher frequencies, incorporate (as much as possible) stuff developers wanted. At no time during this process has Sony/Cerny cared about what MS was doing.

It is interesting to watch the drama queens five years later with their idiotic "Last minute changes because 12TF" argument. Fortunately, the people that buy consoles are not the drama queens, it's moms and dads most of which have no idea what a TFlop is but know how a price tag looks like. Sure MS will win over some customers with their "TFTFTFTF" yelling (notice any similarities with "TTVTVTVSportsTVTV"?) but they come from a distant third place.

In America.

Though apparently it had a big launch... it just pretty much moved downwards after it became clear the machine wasn't a miracle portable.

I'm more amazed how the 3DS sold at all.

So then WiiU didn't had any market that liked it? That would be even bigger flop.

The WiiU had NA... like, for a year or two. The Vita just had a bigger launch and even shorter legs.

OTOH, if Lockhart is true, then they win. There's a reason Portables sell better 8 times out of 10. The Switch sold as it did because it could be both

“Drama queens”...you call out Xbox being a distant 3rd place coming out with better hardware but it’s not an issue because ps5 will sell better regardless. We know that’s gonna happen, the brand sells itself at this point. But saying that in general shows you got a little salt in your reply with the whole “the casuals will avenge me” vibe

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Only PS5 have a chance of having LoD so it win by default.

LoD?

Legion of Doom?

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

At the moment of the design they choose less CUs with higher clock speeds. That have nothing to do with MS. So please explain that if it is impossible to get better result by higher frequency lesser CU count why would they choose these instead of more CUs and lower frequency?

So also don't forget that MS fans were mocking PS fans before (on vgc) with the multiplats on Xbox 360 looking and playing much better, about PS3 having no games, Xbox being the lead on sales... and all those guys just vanished from this site or kept secluded on the nation thread. Now some are coming back for the time being =p

Lol well played. War...war never changes. As you know I’m just glad the pendulum finally swung back. But I will counter that the better multiplats talk stemmed from “teh cell” bragging. And the leading in sales bragging stemmed from the royal ass kicking PS2 gave Xbox ;)

And there are people that stand outside that circle of duality,i hope that most older forumdwellers have grown out of that and judge things by it merits.

They are close enough that 3rd party games will be practically identical on both and it'll come down the exclusives to differentiate which one has the edge over the other. For me, this means it'll be the PS5 that I'll end up buying down the line.
