Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo 64 Lost to PlayStation Because Japanese Gamers Prefer “Depressing Games”

..like others said why is this a story. And I'm pretty sure he was talking about Rpgs not the ps1.

Top 10 sellings PS1 games in Japan:

1. Final Fantasy VII - depressing
2. Dragon Quest VII - distressing
3. Final Fantasy VIII - sad
4. Final Fantasy IX - joyless
5. Resident Evil 2 - hopeless
8. Resident Evil - miserable

His point still stands.

Off-topic; It’s sad that both Yamauchi and Iwata passed away during the WiiU era when things were dire. Their last view of Nintendo was a company with failing hardware, losses in revenue and profit and mediocre reception of games.

The Wii U burns in Nintendo hell.

In other recent and relevant and non-bait news, a Sony boss said this regarding the 3DS:
"No self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those," he raged. "He's too old for that."

Time to make a thread on that!

Someone from Sony said something very similar to that but regarding Gameboy/GBA. It was a bit before the PSP launched, so probably 2004. I think the location was a bar and how no adult is going to be comfortable pulling out a Gameboy/GBA with all their friends around. I think he then went on to list a bunch of random things such as GPS and how if that interests you, the PSP is your handheld.

Could have been Phil Harrison, but I can't remember. Very important though and worth bringing up.

He creates better excuses than most of us could ever dream of, and can attack a whole continent and competitor at the same time to booth. This guy was a champ.

Derby Stallion is a jockey game. If horse races aren't depressing, then I don't know what is.

True. It means that they've already gambled away too much of their money on real horse races.

Can't even afford to gamble anymore so they need to accept only playing in game.

N64 lost to the PS1? Guess you must mean sales. N64 was on the market for 6 years, PS1 was sold for 12 years.
N64 had the better games overall PS1 had more games but not better.
I own and still do both machines and i enjoyed both systems alot but the N64 was miles ahead when it came to quality.
