Also, how many people will be hesitant to take the vaccine in the first place? I know I will. I'm not a guinea pig for an unproven vaccine.

It's not unproven. The vaccines for COVID are going through all the standard phases of human trials to prove safety and efficacy, including testing on thousands, even tens of thousands of volunteers. They're not just releasing it without properly testing it.

They are unproven/unapproved as of today - 11/17.  Although I hear Putin has given the green light to Sputnik 5.

They are all unproven until the FDA has given them full authorization. Without that label, they are all unproven.

With the exception of Russia and China jumping the gun, the vaccines simply haven't finished human trials yet; by the time they're rolled out to the public, they will have completed full standard testing to prove that they are safe and effective.

Normally full standard testing a vaccine takes 10 years. These will be rolled out to the public long before that. Long term effects will be an unknown. But what's worse, pandemic or a small possibility of long term side effects. The good thing is, lots of different vaccines are in development so the chance of ending up in a global Children of men situation is zero. The chance one of them has unwanted long term side effects is there and can't be known until 10 years or more have passed.

Anyway the current situation can't be maintained. Vaccination is necessary, however not everyone needs to be vaccinated to drop the transmission rate below 1. The more the faster it gets under control, yet if Rt is 1.5, simple math says if half of people are immune, Rt drops to 0.75 and the virus disappears. A third is probably enough while sticking to mask wearing and social distancing where possible.

For travel you'll probably need a Covid vaccination record to get into countries which will solve the issue of bringing in new cases all the time.

Long term adverse effects are very rare; most side effects are short and medium term, and this is being tested through giving the vaccines to tens of thousands of volunteers who are then closely monitored over several months. The pace of testing and development may be accelerated compared to previous vaccines developed outside a pandemic, but all the same phases and precautions are being adhered to in order to make sure an unsafe product isn't released to the public. (Well, unless you're in Russia or China)

I for one am completely willing to roll up my sleeve for a COVID shot, so long as it has cleared all three phases of standard human trials.

But you want other people to try them for you.

The good news is that you don't actually have to get a vaccine. And maybe is better that way, the more people reject it the faster I will be able to get mine.

We (Germany) will probably peak very soon (or we might have already).

Thought that too. Until I learned that we test less in germany now. The rate of positive tests has climbed, while total number of test were reduced and number of new infection slightly decreased. So germany now officially also fudges it's numbers to look better.

200k next week for the US? Seems possible. Also, have there been any new measures (in the US)?  I haven't heard anything in a while.

We (Germany) will probably peak very soon (or we might have already).

Austria will probably go into full lockdown soon. (poor Rol)

Austria messed this up spectacularly. And true to form, Austrians will use this last weekend before the harsher lockdown to party hard one last time.

My personal biggest problem with all of it is the rampant stupidity that is going around. And unlike corona, nobody will be finding a cure for that.

I currently feel germany is the country of ignorant snobs and dumbasses. We could've learned from other countries and we somehow managed to get through first wave OKish. But now we mess up. Numbers are high but germany can't decide on decisive measures.

Best of all: our minister of health Jens Spahn is infected. He sent a list of possible contacts to the local health authority, but didn't phone them themself, including a restaurant he visited. Some other visitor of the restaurant on the table besides them learned of the infection of the minister from media - and tested positive. They never got a call to test themself from anyone. Minister and local health authority both claim they did what they were legally bound to do - which is true. But only shows, that contact tracing in germany isn't working.

We had months to prepare for the second wave. But as we germans are arrogant buffoons, we did nothign as we believed we would be better than anyone else. I am currently so pissed about my nationality. We don't need Trump to fuck up.

Idiots like this, man...
Why even wear a mask if you're gonna remove it while screaming?

I see that so often: people wear mask, then remove them to talk to each other....
