Honesty, at this point I don't care who gets the vaccine first or HOW they get it. Russians are not saints, Chinese are not saints, and certainly Americans are not saints. I don't care if they have to spy on each other 24/7. I just want the damn thing figured out for now; then we can go back to kill other over the most stupid little things.

One might think that spying on each other and wasting precious time on cyber defense is not the best way to get a vaccine fast.

One might think that forgoing patents and profit and work together globally to find and produce a vaccine might be a better way, than what we do currently. Alas, nobody even suggested that the vaccine creation process could go faster if every research is put on the table and companies working on it might be compensated differently than by profits.

There is no denying that we're not doing enough to stop this virus.

Avg growth in reported cases was +10.5% for the week compared to last week. Over 1.5 million new cases were reported last week, average of 221.3K daily. Reported deaths have also started rising again, 35 thousand deaths last week, just over 5,000 per day.

The USA continues to climb sharply, +23.8% for the week compared to last week. Just over 471K new cases last week, avg 67.3K daily.
Reported deaths are also climbing, 5,423 last week (4575 the week before), avg 775 daily.

Europe is also climbing again, +3.9% for the week compared to last week, 91.4K new cases last week, avg 13,052 per day.
Reported deaths are still slowly declining, 2619 last week compared to 2732 the week before. 374 daily last week.

The other continents

North America ahead and growing +20.6% compared to last week.
Asia barely ahead of South America, growing at +7.8% compared to last week.
South America stabilized, +1.7% avg growth for the week, ending at -0.9% compared to last Friday.
Africa is also slowing down a bit, still +12.3% growth compared to last week.
Oceania, or rather Australia is dealing with a big outbreak, over 60% growth compared to last week.

Around the world

USA clear ahead, Brazil stabilized, slight decline compared to last week.
India and South Africa continue growing, Iran slightly down.
Canada is also climbing up again, +19.3% avg for the week compared to last week.
Japan is having a big new wave, might even become bigger than the last one. Same for Australia :/
South Korea stabilized but can't get back down. China popped back up last day of the week.

A closer look at Europe, 3-day average reported cases

Spain is surging back up, big new wave.
Most are heading back up, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark all climbing.
Sweden's data has become so messed up I quit tracking it for now. The last official update was July 2nd and every day cases disappear / get redistributed making it look like the pandemic is over. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/
Russia is also suspect, so steady as if they are reporting a 7 day avg every day.
Romania is another hot spot, in between the Ukraine and the UK for new cases daily, stable atm.

Reported deaths are still heading in the right direction on average, it will take at least a few weeks before any new rise in cases has an effect.

In Canada face masks are now mandatory in Quebec to slow the recent growth in cases. In Ontario it's up to the counties to decide. It's mandatory in my county, but not in the ones right next to us. It was very busy yesterday, first day restaurants etc are open again for inside eating. With the hot weather and humidity (feels like 36c, going up to 39c today) I doubt people will stay on the safer patios outside :/

Over 14 million reported cases to date and passing 600k reported deaths in a few hours :(

Lol looking at that youtube video are you safe with guy in face mask and shield holding cafeteria tray.... Might as well wear gloves too. Didn't even watch video but that pic cracks me up.

Fuck eating out. I'll stick to groceries and eating at home.

How do you think there are hundreds of current vaccine prototypes out there? They're there because research is a global effort and all insights into the virus are publicly available. There already is a global network of collaboration. However when it comes to the development of the individual vaccine it's not about collaboration anymore because it's just busywork and going through the same motions as everyone else. That's why it's a great thing that there are so many independent vaccine developers, because it massively speeds up the process. The promise of big bucks will increase the speed even more.

It's not about money, it's about time. Money is available, time isn't. Trying to get research illegitimately is not speeding up the process, it's just maybe saving a greedy country a few bucks, if even, while also slowing down the worldwide process. For once capitalism isn't the root of all evil and it would do people well to realize that and go away with their useless idealism and look at what's actually happening.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

This explains perfectly why I'm worried about back to school. It's mostly theater of low cost measures to get people back to work (by having their kids back in school) Some extra cleaning sure is good and getting the kids to wash their hands more often as well, yet the main path of transmission is through the air and I haven't heard anything yet about installing UV-C filters. It doesn't matter how often you wash your hands, when you put people in a confined space for a long period of time, transmission will eventually happen.

They have some social distancing plans, split the classes in half (yet can't build twice as many schools before September) and have the teachers both teach class in school and teach online for the half that's at home that day. How? You still need twice as many teachers.

More security theater, keep the kids in the same rooms and have the teachers go from class to class. Erm that's how we got all those severe outbreaks in elderly homes, staff working at different homes.... No extra security doing that.

My supermarket also waited until the last day to use face masks (it became mandatory yesterday). Thursday still none of the staff were wearing face masks while stocking shelves (no gloves either) and cleaning carts (or spraying them with something, I clean it myself before and after use anyway) Plastic shields at the registers to make you feel safe.

Face masks aren't enough either. Depending on the type of mask they stop 40% to 90% of droplets, yet airborne micro droplets go right through. You need decent exposure to get infected hence installing UV-C air filters to keep the air clean should work great together with masks. Masks stop the big particles, UV-C air filters keep the concentration of micro droplets low to none. But those things cost money and aren't as easy to ramp up production as face masks.

So nope, we're not really safe and we're not going the whole 9 yards to eliminate the virus like New Zealand.

Resetera are loseing it, americas are seemingly really angry about covid19 handleing.

"Any idea when testing in the US will be useful again? 14 days to get my test results is fucking useless, not to mention that I had to wait 3 days to even get an appointment. Fuck this useless country."

"one of my mom's former kindergarden students died of "covid like symptoms", he was 13. i substitute taught in one of his math classes recently too. really sweet kid."

"so angry, why America is pushing for face to face school when they haven't controlled their first wave yet"

"Another child died in Florida..."

"I wanna know why the mother didn’t allow their child to be intubated"

"I fucking hate this, i fucking hate it so god damn much, i hate my goverment for doing jack shit to do anything about it, i hate our infastructure for not having any precautions in place in case a mass pandemic happens, i hate living in a post covid society, i hate the amount of lives senselessly lost."

The one upside to all this.... I refuse to believe Trump can win a re-election, when hes handled things this poorly.

The overall anger that is bundled  in that site makes me feel depressed,it looks like a space of people with mental issues and i do not think it is helping them to be there but i'm slightly hypocritical because i'm drawn at it too.

Anyway i can not believe they even give the mother the option, that's only in America right?

Generally in most developed nations the carer/parent/guardian gets the first and final say on most aspects of healthcare due to religious/cultural concerns.
Personally I would tell them to go get fucked and do it anyway if it meant saving a life, but that's also why I am not working in the healthcare sector anymore.

Saddening, thing is even if he did it there would be no more options for him to try and steer future patients in the right direction.

I understand it from a religious/culture(if you believe your child will not go to heaven or so) perspective but it's so wrong it only gives more suffering, science can not really be used correctly with religious reasoning behind it.
