One might think that spying on each other and wasting precious time on cyber defense is not the best way to get a vaccine fast.

One might think that forgoing patents and profit and work together globally to find and produce a vaccine might be a better way, than what we do currently. Alas, nobody even suggested that the vaccine creation process could go faster if every research is put on the table and companies working on it might be compensated differently than by profits.

How do you think there are hundreds of current vaccine prototypes out there? They're there because research is a global effort and all insights into the virus are publicly available. There already is a global network of collaboration. However when it comes to the development of the individual vaccine it's not about collaboration anymore because it's just busywork and going through the same motions as everyone else. That's why it's a great thing that there are so many independent vaccine developers, because it massively speeds up the process. The promise of big bucks will increase the speed even more.

It's not about money, it's about time. Money is available, time isn't. Trying to get research illegitimately is not speeding up the process, it's just maybe saving a greedy country a few bucks, if even, while also slowing down the worldwide process. For once capitalism isn't the root of all evil and it would do people well to realize that and go away with their useless idealism and look at what's actually happening.
