#50: Devil May Cry V (PS4)

I've always liked the Devil May Cry series and Capcom hit it out of the park with this one. Incredible character models, fantastic and varied combat. Three playable character with each their own unique style. There's Dante (my favorite) with all the crazy combos he can do by switching melee weapon, ranged weapon and styles on the fly. Nero with his consumable devil breakers and trusty sword and V who fights from afar commanding two demons to do his biding. The story is a bit forgettable but the game truly shines in it's wild action based gameplay.

#49: Resident Evil 5 (PS3)

Without reaching the heights on the its predecessor (few games have), this game is still solid entry into the franchise. It is especially good when playing in local co-op with a capable friend. It relieves the frustration of inventory management and Sheva's AI. The game has great pacing and the return of my favorite RE villain (Wesker), it is more action oriented but still feels like Resident Evil. The bonus mode Mercenaries is a surprisingly enjoyable experience (better in co-op once again) that will get your heart pounding as you chase those high scores to unlock the next stages.

#50 Panel de Pon - SNES

My favorite puzzle game, be it Panel de Pon, Tetris Attack, the Pokemon or Animal Crossing variants, all pretty much just thematic skins from the original, but it really doesn't need anymore than that, the concept and gameplay is perfect as it is. A very fast paced competitive game, the simple loop of combining 3 to more blocks of the same color, making combos to stack trash blocks on top of your opponents, all with fast reflexes and quick thinking, is just a super addictive title, still pick up and play any version whenever I'm in the mood for a V. Hard round of this.

#49 - Pokemon Ultra Sun - 3DS

After the very disappointing X/Y, S/M came and were closer to my ideal Pokemon experience, a more inspired region, better story, good characters, great music and the like, still felt more could have been done with them, come the Ultra versions, while these aren't exactly a perfect improvement in some areas it does enough to solidify my love for this generation and a close second place to my favorite Pokemon games.

Among some of my favorite improvements were the addition of a more extended Victory Road, a nice boss Pokemon in Necrozma, the final trial of the game being a really nice way to close off the island challenge and Hau, a character that while  I understood as a friendly rival in S/M, never really clicked with me, god damn, what one change in his final duel in terms of set up and music can do for one, he is now one of my favorite rivals and a character I love and respect. And Episode Rainbow Rocket was great stuff, some nice remixes and Giovanni finally gets the theme he deserves after decades.

Some scenes were changed with Lillie but overall remains one of the best characters in the franchise and well developed.

About the only sacrifice I didn't like was Lusamine, partly thanks to the anime version of her I'll say, what was honestly a pretty intense and legit crazy character for Pokemon was very dumbed down and the addition of the Necrozma storyline while it does a bit better the Ultra Space, is still a rather rushed wrap up to the climax of the story.

Still, as a whole one of the best Pokemon games. Also gave me a Champion theme that I can say with confidence, is my absolute favorite, was always rather hard to choose among the many excellent tracks for them, but this, this is it for me.

#48 Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
guessed by TruckOSaurus
platform Wii
release year 2007
developer/publisher Capcom
genre adventure, puzzle
links Wikipedia
past years 2018: #44

Zack&Wiki is a wacky adventure, very much in the style of classical point-and-click adventures (which I am a big fan of), but utilizing the Wiimote for many actions in the game. It not only copies the gameplay style from old Lucas Arts adventures, it features also the crazy humour. And it casts even a pirate boy in the main role, as the legendary Monkey Island series. But it is not a simple rip-off, art-style, story, the puzzles and their solutions, the use of the Wiimote and the cast of characters make this their very own great adventure game. #capcomdidgood

The game features Zack, a young pirate that is the main character you play and Wiki, his flying monkey companion. You will solve in each stage puzzles with the environment, often mimicking with the Wiimote the action Zack is doing. One main feature is, that you can startle enemies by turning Wiki into a bell and ring it to make a noise. This move will turn the enemies into useful items, that are often needed to solve the puzzle at hand.

In the course of the adventure you search for treasure items from the legendary pirate captain Barbaros that in turn complete his skeleton. You also meet a bunch of other characters, mostly pirates hunting for treasure too.

The game was a fun experience which is pretty much a must-play for classical adventure fans. Sadly it only sold 420K, which makes it unlikely that Capcom will port it to newer platforms (Switch). But it would be pretty nice if Capcom remembered they had this little gem in their catalog and give it a rerelease.
