With 8k showing up at CES this year, a dynamic checkerboard 8k PS5 upgrade wouldn't be out of the question at some point.

I hope Sony learns from the Pro and X, and delivers a full 8K console. Checkerboard 4K and no UHD Blu-Ray drive were/are the most unattractive things about PS4 Pro.

Honestly, I want Sony to offer an 8K capable PS5 at launch. Make it known that it is only an 'option' aimed at the hardcore Gaming and A/V enthusiast crowd. They can sell it for $1,500, and give players a way to expereince Horizon 2, God of War 2, Gran Turismo Sport, and The Last of Us Part II at 8K.

Microsoft already offers Gears and Forza at 8K on and Windows, Sony needs to counter that.

Why? So MS did something that appeals to less than 0.1% of gamers who have PCs worth about $10K. What does MS's efforts on PC gaming have anything to do with Sony's path going forward? Why should Sony Care at all? MS came out with the Xbox One X, and it's barely made a dent in Sony's dominance in the US Market, much less the worldwide one. MS's ability to advertise having "the most powerful console ever" doesn't mean squat for most people deciding between an Xbox and a Playstation. Sony figured out long ago that if you make a console that can go head to head with the competition reasonably well, and keep your choices to piss off your fanbase and development partners to a minimum, then exclusive games and content will push people to your platform, and they are eating MS's lunch in that regard.

Exactly right. Historically, the most expensive consoles always fail. Right now, $300-$500 is the market price for a brand new console at launch. If Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo can't make it happen for $500 they need to lower the specs. People that want to spend more can buy a gaming PC.

Well the cost is kinda irrelevant. Regardless of the cost of making a premium console it literally makes no sense to make one. Very, very few people would buy it, and very very few developers will do more than the bare minimum. The purpose of halo products is to provide concepts and show the world where technology is headed. A premium console would do nothing more than show "this is what Playstation exclusives would look like on a bleeding edge PC".

The market has proven to us multiple times that $400 is the maximum acceptable price for a base model console at launch.  Both Sony and MS have learned this lesson the hard way in the last few generations.  I certainly hope that both of them have something planned for under $400 for next gen.  Unfortunately, I have little faith in either of them to learn from past mistakes.

Mid cycle upgrades with zero or a small handfull of exclusives to utilize the upgraded hardware makes no sense. I agree with you there. Upscaling existing games makes such a small difference most people don't care about it. Again, that is what the gaming PC market is for.

lol, no one in the console space cares about 8k or 120fps.
