Why? So MS did something that appeals to less than 0.1% of gamers who have PCs worth about $10K. What does MS's efforts on PC gaming have anything to do with Sony's path going forward? Why should Sony Care at all? MS came out with the Xbox One X, and it's barely made a dent in Sony's dominance in the US Market, much less the worldwide one. MS's ability to advertise having "the most powerful console ever" doesn't mean squat for most people deciding between an Xbox and a Playstation. Sony figured out long ago that if you make a console that can go head to head with the competition reasonably well, and keep your choices to piss off your fanbase and development partners to a minimum, then exclusive games and content will push people to your platform, and they are eating MS's lunch in that regard.

Exactly right. Historically, the most expensive consoles always fail. Right now, $300-$500 is the market price for a brand new console at launch. If Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo can't make it happen for $500 they need to lower the specs. People that want to spend more can buy a gaming PC.

Well the cost is kinda irrelevant. Regardless of the cost of making a premium console it literally makes no sense to make one. Very, very few people would buy it, and very very few developers will do more than the bare minimum. The purpose of halo products is to provide concepts and show the world where technology is headed. A premium console would do nothing more than show "this is what Playstation exclusives would look like on a bleeding edge PC".
