#50 Valkyria Chronicles 4
guessed by The_Liquid_Laser
platform Switch
release year 2018
developer/publisher Sega
genre turn-based strategy
links Wikipedia

As the Switch got more and more games of series I never played, I tried some of it. Valkyria Chronicles was right up my alley: nice presentation with graphic in the style of drawings, fantastical setting (although kinda inspired by the real world), turn-based strategy, light RPG elements. And it worked out well. This game works well to satisfy my craving for strategy. I usually prefer turn-based (I like more to ponder my decisions than think fast) and this is turn-based. But at the same time it uses some tricks to let it look more like a real-time game: while you make your move you hear randomly shootings in the distance, people yell, enemies open fire (although the rules decide if they hit or not), you can move freely. This is quite a nice mix and something I haven't seen in other games so far. Therefore it enters my TOP 50.

#49 Descent
guessed by The_Liquid_Laser
platform DOS
release year 1995
developer/publisher Parallax/Interplay
genre first person spaceship shooter
links Wikipedia, download shareware version (kinda like a big demo)

Descent jumped in on the early 3D-shooter hype but brought it a level further: they made it a space shooter with complete rotation around all 3 axis (so six keys for turning) and moving along these axis (so six more keys for moving). As the levels had no discernible up and down (for the most part) you could come back into a room you were earlier but now upside down. The robots that were rioting had some decent AI for the time, the dodged enemy fire, hid behind cover and came back to shoot at me. At the end of each level you had to activate the self-destruct and then still fleeing from the asteroid in time.

#48 - Resistance 3

PS3 - 2011

After two slightly above average shooters, Insomniac hit it out of the park with this one. To my mind, the jump between Resistance 2 & 3 is almost as big as the jump between Uncharted or Assassin's Creed 1 & 2.  The gunplay was better, the pacing was better, the story was more intimate and meaningful (with a surprising twist two thirds of the way through the game. A great game to end the series on.

Star Wars Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire

  • Mac OS
  • 1995
  • Rail-Shooter
  • LucasArts

'Star Wars Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire' is a very important game to me as well. When we got our first home computer in 1995, this was the first game that was bought with it and as such, it is the first computer game, not console, computer game, I ever played. As faith would have it, it turned out to be a good one to start off with for sure.

Not only was it the first computer game I played, it was also the game that introduced me to the Star Wars Universe, which is still one of my favorite things in popular culture. I was immediately drawn in, from the first appearance of Darth Vader in the cool live-action opening cutscene to the final destruction of the hidden TIE Fighter factory. The story, the universe, the levels and character quotes, I can dream this game from start to finish.

The game is a rail-shooter, with a couple of playing styles. There's flying levels and on-foot levels, both in two sub styles; third person and first person. The third person flying levels are all about avoiding objects at fast pace while the first person levels are about shooting down waves of enemy fighters. Like any rail-shooter, the game is short but with a very high replayability factor, which I did, many, many, many times.

I thought someone would get that game, maybe a bit easier then.

#46: I don't think the trick with the light-bulb actually works.

Another go at the yet unguessed games, before I have to reveal them:

#47
a) Shipwrecked at this cursed island.
b) Explore the island to find castaways from the shipwreck to add more members to your party or get new functionality out of the basic settlement of the survivors from the shipwreck, that you help set up.
c) How can be Primordials on this island? They are extinct!
d) Strange dreams about this girl.
e) The ship Lombardia is travelling the Gaete Sea as it is attacked by a gigantic underwater creature that sinks the ship and scatters the passengers on the Isle of Seiren.

#46
a) Exploration on a hex-grid.
b) Play as well-known explorers or scientists from the past.
c) Be the first to find the golden pyramid.
d) You can discover lot's of strange sites and objects in this indie game.
e) Start your expedition to satisfy your curiosity.

#45
a) Point-and-click adventure on a touchscreen.

The Gamecube was a very formative console for me, these are two of the titles that I forever replay from the console and have nice memories of. More to come at higher spots.

#48 Luigi's Mansion - GCN

A short but sweet adventure and my first game for the Gamecube, Luigi's Mansion is great arcadey fun from beginning to end, nice exploration, great atmosphere and really fun boss fights, a really memorable time.

#47 Kirby's Air Ride - GCN

From the many, many titles of the industry most consistent franchise, be it mainline or spin off, Air Ride is one of my favorites, while its main racing mode and Top Ride are a really nice time on their, the big mode of this game and the reason I always come back to is City Trial, a mode where you explore a city, fool around, upgrade your ship within the time limit, with ramdom events happening and culminating on a stadium event, is hard to describe just how addictive this mode is, but it just works. I'm still waiting for a sequel.

I'll put these hints up again before tomorrow's game.

#46: To beat the game you need to shoot for the moon.

#45: You can get a weapon that plays the final part of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in the background everytime you use it.

#44: An oft-overlooked PS2 space fantasy JRPG from the studio that more recently even got to work together with Studio Ghibli on one of their games.

#45 Ratchet and Clank PS4? It also happened in PS All Stars Battle Royale but I doubt its that game.

#44 This must be Rogue Galaxy, a very good game.

Edit, #45 could also be A Crack in Time too I think.
