Japan is a very minor market when compared to North America and Europe.

In terms of individual countries, Japan has a very large video game market, but it has been left behind in the dust when it comes to regional markets.

The old Japanese region now has to be called the Asian Market if its to compete with Europe and America in terms of playstation. No individual country bar the USA has sold more ps4's then Japan. It's obviously very important to Sony. Not only have they increased sales this gen over the ps3 last gen but the profit margin for the console both hardware and software is ridiculously better. Oh Sony care alright.

Yeah, this. It also shouldn't be forgot, that many game-devs are situated in Japan and for many of these the home market is important. So to have good relations with japanese third-parties the japanese market can't be underestimated.

Hmm, but obviously Japan is not a minor market overall. It is just that Sony has lost the grip here a bit. Treating it badly therefore would be as bad, as say Nintendo treating europe badly, because it isn't exactly Nintendos strongest market. If a market underperforms for your product, you have to put work into it to make your product perform better.

It’s a market that’s contracted severely - that’s undeniable. That’s why your Europe comparison doesn’t work. Sony can cater to that market but it would be at the detriment of the other, bigger markets.

Why would it to the detriment? Your explanation does not make much sense.

And why does my comparison not work. Nintendo has not much sales in eastern europe, because they don't have much in representation there. Does that mean Nintendo shouldn't try to build representation, if the sales don't pick up on their own? And at the time Sony expanded into the european market it was very small for console. You argument means they shouldn't have invested in that market (and they invested heavily) in the first place. No, your argument is wrong. Japan has 130 million people, good wealth and many active gamers. If you underperform in that market it is, because you haven't tried enough. OK, given, it is not easy, looking at the MS situation. But then a business is easy?

What's so impressive about the Switch is that it has so many games selling well. That's quite a list. Nothing overly impressive but continuous sales from the main games and a flurry of new smaller titles coming in that are keeping the Switch's momentum.

Minecraft is killing it again! Switch above 50.

good week.

Riiight lol.

A lot of 3rd party niche titles sell a majority in Japan, if Sony gets surpassed by ninty here while ninty keeps pace those titles will go to switch or at least multiplat, unlike the previous two gens.

Also remember that Japan, though only one country, has a potential sales cap of at least 20 mil. Only the US surpasses that as a country

Yup. It's hanging in there. If it ends up close to PS3, I think that's a great feat in a market vastly preferring handheld gaming.

I wonder if Kingdom Hearts III, Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link (this is a Platinum game and it looks great), Resident Evil 2 Remake, Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima can do anything for it.

Also Sony should really develop or finance a fully fledged console game set in the Fate/Grand Order universe. It's the biggest mobile game in Japan and Sony is the publisher.

Of course Japan is very important. I'm not just saying that because Nintendo is doing very well there, but because Japan as a market is very important for directions/trends and overal culture these Japanese developers rely on. It is also no small market when you look at hardware and software sales to any other individual country with relative populations. A good example are the great sales of Monster Hunter World and Splatoon 2.
