Forums - Nintendo Discussion - L.A. Noire Switch Ver. to run 1080p docked, 720p handheld and more

Heh, I highly doubt it has that much power. If it did Doom would probably be 60 fps and Splatoon 2 would be locked at 1080p.

It has a lot of RAM but that could easily be used simply making textures better.

6-8x more RAM, much more capible GPU even in portable mode not to mentine docked mode, much more newer and much more efficient CPU thats more capable for modern games, and huge generational tech/architecture difference (we talking about 10 years newer tech/aricture difrence for GPU/CPU), make power difrence around 3-4x compared to PS3/Xbox360.

About resolution of games and FPS, you have lotsa games that are 720p (not to mention 30FPS) even on XB1 that's noticeable stronger than Switch.

What it does in practice matters more than the specs on paper. Generally speaking, Switch games look like more polished 7th gen games. Running a game like LA Noire in 1080p is actually pretty impressive compared to a lot of Switch content.

Few X1 games are running 720p/30, that's an exception and far from common. Switch is doing 1080p on a fairly regular basis, but its mostly with 7th gen era graphics. Meanwhile Doom on Switch is a huge step back compared to X1.

Either way, you guys don't need to get defensive. A game like LA Noire hitting 1080p on Switch isn't that common, its going to be a notable looking game on that hardware.

Well Switch can run 7th gen games at 1080p with better more stable frame rate, or 8th gen games at lower resolution or at 30fps instead of 60fps.

Actually only few Switch games are also running 720p/30fps, I think that Doom will be first 720p/30fps Switch game.

I am not getting defensive, just bringing some obvious points.

Again, I'm judging Switch by what it does in practice. Based on LA Noire and other titles, it seems like any 720p/30 fps game on PS360 can achieve 1080p/30 fps on Switch. Maybe even have overhead to spare for polish.

This sentence is wrong, "or 8th gen games at lower resolution or at 30fps instead of 60fps." Because Doom on Switch doesn't just lower the resolution and frame rate, but its taking a big hit in overall effects and asset quality along with resolution and performance.

Hence, Doom on Switch PROBABLY wasn't a huge endeavor because the engine is already very scaleable and designed for modest CPUs. But that could probably be said for any game running 60 fps on 8th gen consoles.

Thats what I basically said for 7th gen games, but we also seeing more stable frame rates also, for instance Minecraft or Skyrim.

Doom is not out yet, those DF conclusions cannot be serious in any case, so better we first wait launch of game and proper DF article, and Doom is just one game we cant take conlusion for all games just based on one game. Not to mention that's very strange that game will have same resolution in portable and docked mode. Also we still dont know enuf  about Panic Button team thats behind this Doom port but also behind Rocket League port for Switch, it's also interesting that it was said that Rocket League will have 720p resolution on handheld and docked mode (same like Doom), beauce ever launched Switch game until now has higher resolution in docked mode compared to handheld mode, so if that is relly true than those ports are definatly not best ports.

Is Skyrim officially 1080p on Switch? I don't think that has been confirmed but I wouldn't be that surprised if it is.

Doom isn't out but bear in mind the specs have limitations. The GPU power is a lot lower, much less RAM to work with (less space for high quality assets), so don't expect X1 and PS4 visuals.

Maybe Doom will use the dynamic resolution. The vertical resolution will stay at 720p while the horizonal changes.

If Doom is running 720p natively both docked and undocked, its possible they're using resources for better visual quality when docked. Such as post processing effects that smooth out jaggies, maybe higher quality shadows and light, etc. So equal resolution doesn't mean equal visual quality.

I think its not still official, but we had some infos and videos, and people were saying that's 1080p.

Of Course that Switch has limitations compared XB1/PS4 and that's why nobody expect that game will be 1080p/60fps on Switch also, but lets wait launch version of game and proper analysis.

It's possible, but again with Mario Odyssey we seeing higher res and better visuals for docked mode. And Rocket League Devs said game will be same in portable and home console mode, in any case, its will be very strange to see same resolution in portable and docked mode, because we don't have any example of that yet.

Assuming Doom is coming in the near future, like months, don't expect significant changes from what we've seen. Usually the extra polish is more stable performance and other tweaks.

I highly doubt visual fidelity will be the same for docked and unlocked. Its amwaste of resources on technically demanding titles. Therefore I predict better graphics in docked if the resolution is equal.

We will see in any case, for instance we just recently saw that Mario Odyssey got 900p boost for docked mode and game is releasing next month.

For the record, Doom isnt locked 1080p/60fps on PS4/XB1, on PS4 has dynamic resolution, while on XB1 most of time runs at 828p resolution, and FPS its not locked neither of PS4/XB1, on XB1 actualy FPS imost of time is below 60 fps.

"This highlights one area where a PS4 exhibits an advantage over Xbox One: it boasts a full 1080p output for the vast majority of the duration, with minor drops in resolution occurring in select circumstances. In contrast, Xbox One regularly struggles to hit full 1080p, more often coming in around 1472x828 or lower."

Yeah, Doom is not regularly hit 1080p because the X1 is already being over taxed trying to achieve high quality visuals and frame rate.

The Switch version isn't just dropping to 720p and 30 fps, but its also reducing the quality of assets and effects. As Digitalfoundry suggested, some graphics setting will even lower than the lowest PC settings. Frankly, it would probably be really difficult to bring this to Switch if it wasn't already designed for 60 fps on 8th gen consoles.

It makes me think of Battlefield 4 on PS360. That version actually runs a resolution at par with X1. But the difference in frame rate, effects, and asset quality is massive. This is essentially what Doom is on Switch, but with a lower resolution than X1, which is fine because it will still enjoyable with reduced visuals and its portable.

Again, that DF conclusions can be taken for serious, because they didn't had direct footage, instead they used ND footage, and emulated Switch hardware on PC, and from they take conclusion, lol, not to mention that we didn't had docked mode and that this wasn't final version of game. Only that is certain curently, is that game runs at 30FPS curently at portable mode, so better we wait for launch of game and proper DF article. Also again, this is still just one port, we don't know if Panic Button will do good or bad job with this port.

Switch version of Doom of course will be downgraded to PS4/XB1 versions of games, but Switch version will offer full handheld mode that PS4/XB1 dont offer.
