Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Prediction: Mario Kart 9 won't release until a decade or more after MK8

Classic Nintendo. Still waiting for Metroid Prime, Fzero, Starfox, and a proper Paper Mario rpg sequel. Any two of these and i would get a switch (light).

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I feel that Nintendo should make diddy kong racing that way they have a new kart racer to satiate gamers and it gives them a stepping stone toward the design  direction  they might take with MK9.

I've been waiting for a new Diddy Kong Racing for over 20 years. IMO it was a much better game than Mario Kart 64.

Yes Yes Yes Agreed.

Absolutely.  It was my favorite racing game until Mario Kart Wii.   At this point, I don't think we are ever going to see a sequel though.

Switch Code: SW-7377-9189-3397 -- Nintendo Network ID: theRepublic -- Steam ID: theRepublic

Now Playing
Switch - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (2019)
Switch - Bastion (2011/2018)
Switch - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2014/2017)
3DS - Pushmo (2011)
Wii U - Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (2010/2017)
Mobile - The Simpson's Tapped Out and Yugioh Duel Links

People thinking Nintendo will repeat their past mistakes and wait until the Switch is dying before releasing a successor...

I think we will see MK9 2023 at the latest, Switch 2 will target fall 2022.

Well, gonna pat myself on the back for this prediction way back coming true. Virtually no chance we see mk9 next year given they will still be rolling out dlc for mk8 all through the year, which means 2024 at the earliest (a decade after mk8 originally released). Little did I know, it could even be much later since I def don’t see it coming before the successor.

Yeah like I said, Nintendo could easily just port MK8 to the Switch successor, and it will sell very well. They could also release a poorly optimized Pokemon game while they are at it. Both games at launch would be massive.

To each their own, but Origami King, was absolutely amazing.  I get it didn't have rpg experience points, but the battles (especially bosses) were just something special.

Right now, it looks like this prediction is 95% accurate. There's so little chance of MK9 releasing in 2023. It could happen on Switch in 2024 or later, but it would likely mean a cross-gen release or a long wait for Switch 2.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 144 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million)

PS5: 105 million Xbox Series S/X: 60 million

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Mario Kart 9 or 10 has such potential to be a revolutionary experience. I really hope they have their Breath of the Wild moment with this series. Mario Kart 8 is an absolute refinement of everything that came before it, but I just don’t see how they can top that experience without doing something kind of crazy.

A few things I would consider to fit this bill:

1. Nintendo Kart, with an emphasis on introducing new characters to the franchise. Would also love to see animation intros ala Smash Bros for this. This sets up the potential for so many cool new tracks and items and would replace the Smash reveals throughout the Switch 2 generation.

2. Actual Mario Bros levels. Mario Kart levels are great, but I wouldn’t say they are taken out of any of the Mario levels. I would love to drive around the settings if Mario 3 or Mario Galaxy. A course that went through New Donk City would be pretty cool, too.

3. Grand Theft Mario Kart. This would be an open world Mushroom Kingdom with plenty of tracks to run through but would also allow you to complete side missions and explore the levels when you’re not racing. You could earn to licenses to compete in the 100, 150, 200, etc. Coins would be available to find to use to purchase new kart pieces and special karts could be earned by performing long missions or by navigating platforming levels, either 2D or 3D.

I know none of these ideas will happen, but I just hope that when we return for another title that there is a wow factor of some kind.

MK9 will certainly be in the launch year of the Switch successor.
