Zelda might sell better LTD but I don't care. Horizon sequel is pretty much guaranteed.
Breath of the Wild will sell a lot more in the long run, it is a matter of userbase. Breath of the Wild is the bigger game with the bigger potential. It's going to be selling well for a much longer time.

Proof/source? Seems dumb to limit how much money you can make, but then again, NES Classic. |
Maybe its restocked now but a couple weeks post launch it was difficult to find a copy from a major retailer.
Anecdotally I've went to a couple Walmarts and saw no Wii U copies. But there must have been 50 copies for Switch in the display.
You'll hear similar stories from other Wii U owners. Also the Wii U version sold significantly less in spite of being sold out everywhere for a period.

Larger user base gives Horizon excellent sales, but besides having excellent sales too, BotW achieved an incredible attach rate too. We know that NS had "one of the best" launches in the last years, but not "the best", so we know that it must have sold more than or equal to BotW sales, but less than the largest launch in the last years, and this means that BotW attach rate on NS was at least quite larger than 1:2 and possibly close to an incredible 1:1 that normally only bundling can achieve. Even knowing that the range of AAA titles available at alunch is still narrow, we must also consider that even amongst Ninty users Zelda is loved by a large share of gamers but not by everybody, some just don't even like the genre, so these sales are really great, whatever point of view we observe them from.
I predicted it. It was really obvious, the game had a big hype, a stellar marketing track, it wad a playstation exclusive on a platform with a userbase of more than 50 millions players.
On the other hand, Zelda had a userbase of barely 12 millions. And Zelda games are not sale charts juggernauts.
People were just thinking that since Horizon is a new IP, it wouldn't sell much, but there is no indication that it was a sure thing. The Last of Us, watch Dogs, destiny, the division, there is plenty of new IP selling well on the current gen.
One question:
Can you buy the Zelda digitally too?
Because the retail and digital sales of HZD is 2.6 million copies within its first 2 weeks, so the 1.8 million is much higher with the digital numbers.
And the numbers.
Zelda is a 20 years franchise, and the only game for Switch. The only RELEVANT game. If you are not interested in Zelda, yo won't buy Switch. Horizon is a new IP for a console where you can choose from hundreds of multiplatform AAA titles and brands. It is a very competitive brand. I was sure that Zelda will outsell Horizon due to these facts. So, it's interesting, and disappointing from a Zelda game or outstanding from a new IP.
Of course Zelda is digital as well, so both games would be higher with them.
Zelda sold as well as it could given supply constraints, and it ended up the best selling Nintendo launch game (non bundled). Horizon is not directly competing with the entirety of the PlayStation 4 library either, that's a poor argument. Horizon isn't gonna sell less just because uncharted 4 came out a while ago. What competes are games released around the same time as horizon. And a larger install base is an advantage, not a limiter. Zelda may be a launch title but it had supply constraints and horizon also had a full on week of sales of a 55+ million user base. Zelda had 2 days, supply constraints, and a small user base.
That isn't to say horizon sales are not impressive, but it clearly had more in its favor of advantages compared to Zelda, and Zelda continues to sell well despite this. Those legs are looking good the following month still (despite Switch supply constraints), whereas horizon has dropped more. Once the supply constraints end, and the Switch sells more, let's see how the two games leg out in the long run.

Yes, you can buy Zelda digitally, too.
I wonder why we keep focusing on first week sales as if that's all that mattered? Zelda is going to outsell Horizon comfortably in the long run because Zelda is a franchise that keeps selling for a long time. First week sales aren't everything.
As for the bolded part: That's some twisted thinking. Nintendo said they'd ship 2 million Switch units first month so that's all Zelda can sell on the Switch (and who is going to buy it for the Wii U, which is a dead console?). People are not going to buy two copies of the game. Horizon wasn't hindered by its large install base or the "competition from other games" (that never stopped any game from selling in the history of video games and never ever have we heard that argument for any game before on vgchartz - it's just now that people are bringing this up). Only having 1 million or so systems available to sell on first week? That puts an actual ceiling on the sales. Also, the Switch was sold out at launch (and still is apparently) so we have actual proof the number could have been higher if there was more hardware supply.
It's really disappointing the reasoning here. Wii U is dead and manage to sell 400K copies in USA alone. Acting WiiU doesn't exist. Some people here. ( Damage Control )
People acting here that Zelda is in disadvantage and Horizon all has the advantage. The only advantage Horizon has is the install base ( a bit of days ). Also, the new IP syndrome hold back Horizon. Luckily it has a great Meta and good word of mouth that cause legs even in Japan.
Meta Critic, Love franchise by many, Proven IP, A big First party game and a launch title for Switch those are Zelda's advantage.
Switch is supply constraint yes but Zelda was also release in WiiU even if Switch is supply constrain it is still available on a bigger install base than Switch acting that WiiU doesn't exist is comical. Any sane people that cannot find a Switch to play Zelda will look for an alternative to play Zelda and that will be WiiU.
With the numbers now on NPD. Zelda is under tracked and Zelda could have beaten Horizon when you combine all the numbers.
