Forums - Nintendo - Will the paywall kills Splatoon ?

No, if anything it's going to help Nintendo as it means more people are going to want to buy the service so they can play it. I mean the best part of Nintendo games are the online like with; Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Pokémon, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Mario Maker, etc.

I think it can kill it among WiiU owners who has the first one. First of all it seems more like a port with some added features rather than a sequel. So it wouldn't make sense for WiiU owners to buy a new game for a new console with paid online. So, I think it depends on Switch success. If a lot of people who doesn't have WiiU will buy it then Nintendo won't have any problems with Splatoon 2

It didn't kill Call of Duty, so no. Yeah yeah, Nintendo audience is different and more sophisticated than the Sony/Microsoft crowd, but not really, they're still humans all the same.

Also, where you getting $50 annual fee from? They haven't announced a price yet.

Whaaaa? Who ever said/thought that? I don't think that's a thing. :) Still human though.

Unless I'm a subscriber I won't buy it, Splatoon alone isn't enough to convince me to subscribe.

So it could affect my purchase, and I doubt I'm the only one in the world who thinks like this.

I wonder when they will kill online for wii u perhaps shortly after Switch online starts as a subscription service. Both splatoon and mario kart are only updates on the wii u version and seems strange those being free online on one console and charged on the other.

If there is a price cut and I get a Switch I doubt I will buy mario kart because it will have no online for me. Not too interested in Splatoon anyway so thats a non-issue.

And I dont think that stopped PS4 games from being awesome and continue to sell well!

But the PlayStation and Nintendo fanbases are markedly different, and there are MANY titles on PS4 that are online focused, whereas Online Multiplayer on a Nintendo System is by comparison a rarity. The only Nintendo game I have EVER played online is Mario Kart... DS,Wii,3DS,WiiU combined. Online Multiplayer just isn't as prevalent in Nintendo Games, so is it really worth paying a subscription for one or two games?

I imagine if we had Data Nintendo Consoles are HEAVILY skewed towards singleplayer and local gameplay compared to PS4/XBO.

It's hard to justify paying a subscription for just one or two games, when everything else I'll never touch the online, if it even features it.

How is that? Several of Nintendos juggernaut-Franchises outside of Mario and Zelda have online play. Smash, Mario Kart, Splatoon and Mario Maker are all geared towards it and ARMS seems to be going that direction as well. Several others have an online play option that isn't as much of a focus.

There will be a ton of online games so most people will go ahead and pay for the service if they are interested in playing online.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

We'll have to wait and see, Splatoon was a huge succes last gen so i'd rather not make predictions.
But for me yeah, payed online turned this game from a "maybe, yes" to a "never" unless the online is 20$ a year.

OT: I don't think so. Some Nintendo purist might be put off but for the most part, it should be fine. Nintendo just have to make sure their service is worth it and at least on par with PSN in terms of quality of connection(?)/reliability. If they can get the network to be as good as Live, then you're cooking.

You know that same Nintendo audience defended the Wii U no matter what right. I don't think the Nintendo audience is in any way more sophisticated than PS4 and Xone.
