While I do a lot of business trips, I really welcome the switch.

Switch is a powerful and sexy machine. Now we just need good games on it. Looking forward for January 12th.

3DS is like 4.8 Gflops.
Vita is like 50+ something Gflops.
The switch on the go, will be around 150 Gflops going by rumors about clockspeeds (and it being a Tegra X1).
Switch vs 3DS = 31 times more powerfull.
Switch vs Vita = 3 times more powerfull.
Your going to see better than PS Vita Level graphics on the go, with the switch.
The switch is looking to be a good handheld.

Theres no way dude.
Unless the switch ends up being too expensive to produce, and it just doesnt make any sense.
It throws away the unified games library idea (unless the 3DS replacement can play the Switch games in portable mode).
It ll add a 3rd layer to all quality controll & testing, for each and every game (developer nightmare! goodbye 3rd party)
The Switch is the portable, a 3ds replacement would also deminish the value of the switch (its a hybrid dude), its like shooting yourself in the foot.
Nintendo isnt going to make a 3ds replacement, its switch or nothing.

In all seriousness though, I'm sure Nintendo will be capable of doing a lot more. It'd be nice if Donkey kong: tropical freeze got ported as well. |
Thanks for this thread, because Switch is a handheld with a few home console abilities. But it stays a handheld.
But for mobile gaming it brings a lot to the table. Not only the sheer power, big for a handheld. There is other stuff. For example: was there ever a handheld with a controller-option for multiple players like shown in the reveal?
I hope battery lifetime is not too bad, that would be a bummer.
It's a handheld, not a home console. However, the 3DS isn't a good base to say "maaaasive upgrade". Low end phones today are beating 3DS on graphics quite handily.
But Vita still has mobile phones beat, not in performance but in the actual game graphics. Switch is several times more powerful and on par with modern Apple SoCs. Considering how mobile phones have absurdly crappy APIs and are extremely badly optimized (come on, Vita has 50 Gflops and still beats games running on 300 Gflops phones), Switch will be substantially above mobile devices.
It will probably deliver PS360 to Wii U visuals on the go and better than Wii U visuals when docked. That's quite good.

No way, Nintendo is smarter to compete with itself. I guess this hybrid thing will help them concentrate on one console, so that they can get all the support it needs. |
Just I've heard a few people say the Switch is to big and not very portable, it is not something you could shov in a pocket which I think is what people that game alot on the go want.
So Nintendo would be just tapping into a market that aren't interested in the home console part.

if the OS, the architecture and the library of games is the same, it's not competiting. It would be something like the 3DS/new 3DS/2DS family |
Yeah I don't think people understood my point but you seem to have got what meant that it would use Switch Cartridges and run Switch games just at a lower res.

We have a 3DS XL and 3DS they seem to be ok? So Nintendo just makes a smaller Switch nothing extra to program for exact same internals with some limited changes to make it cheaper. I would call that a win for those who have no interest in the home console side of things

Guess you could just name it another "Switch" version that is exclusively portable in order to have it at a low cost and all. The way you said it sounded like the 3DS was to the WiiU. Now I think it may be possible but too early to say, it would depend on the performance of the Switch, and how will people welcome the new hybrid thing.
