The Switch is the portable, a 3ds replacement would also deminish the value of the switch (its a hybrid dude), its like shooting yourself in the foot.

Nintendo isnt going to make a 3ds replacement, its switch or nothing.

We have a 3DS XL and 3DS they seem to be ok? So Nintendo just makes a smaller Switch nothing extra to program for exact same internals with some limited changes to make it cheaper. I would call that a win for those who have no interest in the home console side of things

Guess you could just name it another "Switch" version that is exclusively portable in order to have it at a low cost and all. The way you said it sounded like the 3DS was to the WiiU. Now I think it may be possible but too early to say, it would depend on the performance of the Switch, and how will people welcome the new hybrid thing.
