Forums - Gaming - Why PlayStation has become "dull"

What was the most exciting Playstation era?

Playstation 1 87 23.77%

Playstation 2 154 42.08%

Playstation 3 47 12.84%

I think Playstation 4 wil... 78 21.31%

Total:366

This era is the most exciting, with PSVR and everything, the possibilities are amazing.
We have now two great raving franchises, GT and Drivebluc.
We have a brand new expetacular horror franchise, Until Dawn.
We have our Demons Souls, Bloodbourne, which is brilliant.
We have the remastered Uncharteds and the new one, very good looking.
We have a beautiful new controler, the dualshock 4.
Althought, we do have less value than PS3, cause had those hundreds of Ps1 and Ps2 games on Psn and you could revisit them.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I don't really get what you're saying, exactly.

Well, ironically...

The big difference would be that some types of games have fallen out of favor and been replaced by other types of games.

.....and...
The only real difference I see is that some types of games get a lot more exposure, now, though that's more because of consumer preference.
^^^^Is half of what I was trying to say haha. I tend to chain arguments together and create a blurry big picture

Naaah, I think the problem is people are just looking at chart toppers, when the reality is that there is a lot of fun, varied content

Really, I can't disagree with you, Veknoid or Nautilus. You all raise good points. The way I see it, like Pokoko said, is that consumer preference created a market that appears a lot less diverse than what it once was. And like you said, there is still varied content, but it is not at the top of the charts like it once was.

What I would like to see is a more balanced gaming market, where all games can thrive despite their diversities. This is how I feel it was in the PS1 era

tbh PlayStation is not in a bad place but I remember that they had better games previous generations.

Well I don't think anything will come close to the PS2. Just so many games, so many new IPs, so many risks taken by devs and publishers.

I do like this gen overall, and think it could be better than PS3 at least, mainly thanks to a bit of a resurgence in Japanese franchises like Dragon Quest, Persona and hopefully a return to form for Final Fantasy.

I do wonder sometimes, perhaps not with you exactly, but if a lot has to do with us simply getting older and being less easily impressed

I see a lot of good points in there about the way the market has shifted. I absolutely hate the fact that COD, Madden, Fifa, NBA, and so many more unimaginative titles do so well every year. However, I don't get sucked into the hype or the hate. I play the games that I like, and I don't get swayed when those games are not universally loved.

Last gen for example, Heavanly Sword and Lair where some of my favorite titles all gen. As much as they were bashed, I always enjoyed them for my experience with them, and did not let that sour with others negativity. This gen, I think The Order 1886 was a very good title that built on what Naughty Dog did with Uncharted, but ushered in a whole new take, in a new and exciting era. It sucks hard that it will never see a sequel, but I will always enjoy it for what it was, and I will definitely go back and relive it down the road.

As you mentioned, we have Days Gone, Gran Turismo Sport, Horizan Zero Dawn, Detroit Becoming Human, and much more coming in the next 12 months. On top of that, we also have VR titles coming like Farpoint, Resident Evil VII, and Gran Turismo Sport. Then we have PSX16 the first weekend of Dec which is sure to show off new retro and VR exclusives. Games are coming, and PlayStation is still offering a plethora of exclusives. It is just that the market has grown. More games are available, and a larger audience is playing. Gamers are not the largest market in gaming, so we have to accept that these gems of non fiction lure are not going to reach the mass market casual audience that have less creative and open minds.

On the hardware side PlayStation is finally starting to unfold into what Mr. Kutaragi invisioned. PS4 Pro is the first time we have see the hardware go in the direction Ken laid out. PlayStation was always supposed to be an evolving platform with hardware that was shared across the entire company. If Sony continues to expand the PS4 hardware, OS, and PSN to all of its devices, from TVs, to Phones, and Tablets, then we are loking at PlayStation and Sony finally living up to its potential.

Then we have the wider outlook with things like PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Music, PlayStation Now, Play Memories, and Remote Play. This group of network services gives Sony the most complete entertainment package available on any platform. These services are the best value, witb largest selection of content on the market. In addition to PlayStation devices, they are also available across nearly every other device on the market.

So I would agree with you that I despise the way of the current market, but that is because it has become a mass market product, and I really dislike ths unimaginative and dull mass market mindset. However, when you look at the games we have, the hardware that we have, and the services available on that hardware, I can't think of a better or more exciting time to be a PlayStation fan. I have been on PlayStation since 1998, and thjs is the happiest I have even been as a PlayStation oener. I hope they continue to expand the PlayStation range of products, and deliver even better games and services. Bring in productivity and lifestyle apps, and I think PlayStation can finally reach its potential as the ultimate in Performance, Function, Ease of use, Innovation, and Entertainment.

I would say this is the most exciting time ever to be a PlayStation owner.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Not quite. I think that people playing some gems of this generation like TLOUR, Resogun or Bloodborne will have more nostalgia feels than people who have played many PS1 or PS2 games.

For me those games resonated as much as many Nintendo or Sega games I have played on old consoles.

I think the main problem of Playstation currently is the numerous delays they have on several of their big games.

The great variety in A games has been replaced by indies. A games, or full priced non AAA blockbusters have died off. Perhaps gamers have become dull, only buying into the most hyped blockbusters. The console market has become bigger, yet it seems mostly with CoD, FIFA and GTA fans.

Playstation is doing fine. It just launched VR with great variety in the games. It's nice to see developers experimenting again with control schemes etc. I'm having a blast with it like it's the 90's again. VR and TLG in the same season, what more can you want! Team Ico collection in VR :)

Off topic: Is the trouble I'm having with the site fairly widespread? Can't do much but post a quick reply right now.

I'm not sure; everything seems to be ok on my end...

Thx 4 the reply!

I have the same thoughts a lot too. And more than that.........

At the risk of being a hypocrite: most of my game time is dedicated to games I can play online with my friends in short bursts. For me, personally, it's hard to delve into a lot of new IPs and single player games due to time constraints. That isn't to say that I ignore them completely - but I have so much on my plate that I can't play all the different titles I'd like to.

Another sad side-effect of growing up

I cut out most of your post for space' sake, but you raise some good points. Playstation may have fallen slightly by the wayside in terms of first party content, but it has certainly added many great features in other areas.

If they all thrived, you'd see it today.  The market sorted itself.  That's always going to happen with any industry.  If you opened a restaurant with all kinds of food, you'd eventually marginalize the stuff that didn't sell and advertise the stuff that did.

The launch of the PS1 was basically the launch of a new era.  After the crushing constraints of Nintendo control ended, suddenly game development was wide open.  Publishers and development studios threw all kinds of ideas at the wall to see what would stick.  They couldn't do that before in the popular home console space.

The closest thing since has been the rise of indie gaming.  It's the new middle-ware, along with a lot of titles from Japan, and should not be discounted.  Much of the content from the PS1 and PS2 eras was also "middle-ware" in terms of quality.

There is no reason to just focus on games from Activision and EA.  Tons of other stuff is being made and smaller studios are finding plenty of success.

It hasn't.
