If we are looking from a historical perspective IMO its a tie between Doom-Quake-HL.

I chose to vote for Unreal Tournament because of the fact that it almost sparked the fast paced challenging aspect of many modern FPS game, where when it comes down to it the other games were probably better games. However I put unreal thinking that the game gave way to competitive gaming in this world today. However good question, this was a hard one for me to answer.

I don't know classic FPS at all.
So I'm interested in this thread.
Out of all of those I've played the most Doom and Doom II so my vote will go to either.
Half Life. Still today Half Life plays better than 99% of FPS games.
Quake II for me.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
Half-Life for sure, it beat any and all corridor shooters, although my personal favorite was Shadow Warrior.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.
