Even if there ends up being a Metroid game upon NX launch, this guy most likely pulled this rumor out his ass anyway. This is very well the kind of information it takes someone 30 seconds to make up and put onto the internet.

It's not true. Especially since a Metroid game would take at the very least 3 full years to develop/launch. And it seems like they didn't start the thing since early 2015. I'm pretty sure they are developing a Metroid game right now, but it will release best case scenario in 2018.

I think when Tanabe made his statements regarding a Wii U Metroid, he was specifically talking about he and Retro working on a Metroid Prime game. I wouldn't be surprised if Sakamoto were working on a 2D Metroid. Even if he completely struck out with Other M, he's still capable of creating a good, gameplay heavy 2D Metroid game that only has enough story elements to provide a setting for the game.
