I think when Tanabe made his statements regarding a Wii U Metroid,  he was specifically talking about he and Retro working on a Metroid Prime game.  I wouldn't be surprised if Sakamoto were working on a 2D Metroid.  Even if he completely struck out with Other M, he's still capable of creating a good, gameplay heavy 2D Metroid game that only has enough story elements to provide a setting for the game.
