It seems this game is pretty decisive already. Maybe it's not for people that:
prefer the destination over the journey.
prefer discovery over exploration.
prefer a preset story over making your own.
It looks great to me. Hopefully reaching some goal isn't pushed too heavily and I can simply wander around at leisure.

Agreed, I think they've done a good job of explaining what to expect out of the game thus far.  For those still unconvinced, just wait a couple weeks after launch, see what people are saying.   Unlike most games out there, you could wait a freakin year, and still not run any risk of losing out on exploration possibilities heh.  So yeah, wait for player feedback to get a more rounded out impression of the game.  And if you still don't like it, no biggie, there's plenty more out there.

I feel like, If I ever buy this game, I would play it for like one or two weeks and then forget about it for a long time.

Does it have a story, missions, or is it just about going anywhere you want?

Story...not entirely sure yet.  The goal is to get to the center of the Universe, you're presumably told why while you're playing.  Otherwise, why would you know to go to the center?  There are ancient alien ruins and structures to discover(which helps you learn their language so you can interact with their technology/traders), so I'm assuming there'll be side stuff about them (That's just a theory, nothing really tells us that the ancient factions go beyond trading/tech upgrades).  As far as missions, I know that you'll be able to do escort missions for trader convoys, but, Sean did say they weren't interested in just having a ton of quests and you go out and do this and that and the other thing.  So, I wouldn't expect quests in the classical sense, no.

Originality isn't based on conjuring concepts from thin air with no familiar grounding, its about execution in a ways previously unseen.

Point me to another console game where I can explore full scale, procedurally generated planets with their own ecosystems and am able to fly between planets and solar systems in real time. Throw in space battles and the gorgeous, unique  artstyle and I don't see how this game isn't original.

Diversity in the type of AAA games  we recieve is of serious need. We'll get 12 different online Sci-FI FPS's  in one year and not even one Sci Fi game with emphasis on wanderlust and exploration. Its tragic.

So to answer your question, an aweful lot in terms of the AAA game scene.

The execution is more or less being done on a level that is considered safe, especially with the main focus being the goal to reach the center of the universe to uncover some mysterious secret, just like a journey to some hidden location to find some mystical artifact or person.

You say "console game" to lay down a very ultra specific rule but from what I've seen a game like Starbound already has executed what NMS is setting out to do, of course you could easily argue that the game is 2D and not 3D but the execution and plans are near enough the same for the most part (Starbound has procedurally generated planets, creatures, trading with colonies and different alien species for some examples), the art style I would easily say is highly subjective, what you consider "gorgeous" won't always be to another and what they consider beautiful will definitely not always be the same for you, that's something to always remember.

Tbh we've been lacking in diversity with AAA games for a very long time, especially within the space exploration sim genre, which was why a few years back that fans of the space sim genre went crazy to support Chris Roberts Star Citizen game because the genre was sorely lacking and was dormant for years, now a few years later we're finally starting to see a few more space focused games and sims for that area, what that means is that you have to just create something that people have been wanting for years and you'll see people clamoring for it, that's not to say it doesn't have to be entirely original either.

The concept is interesting, but I'm not sure if I wouldn't get bored while playing it. So I'll patiently wait for a price drop to get it.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

You can argue areas where it doesn't excel or stray from formula (controls, specific mechanics), but that doesn't negate the place where it does; the unique execution of the whole, all components interacting with each other. 2D to 3D is not a trivial difference in execution, it really changes the whole experience and feel . Hence why so many games strugged through the transition (Sonic, Mega Man) whilst others spawned something which felt very new (Mario, Zelda). As proven by your response, this game has no real alternative on the market. For me that is a strong indicator of something being original. I want to see more AAA games where peoples closest comparison falls on a 16bit side scrolling adventure :)

The alternative for me really is Starbound, I know because I've been playing it for nearly 2 and a half years now, it's not in 3D but still has plenty of the concepts NMS is sporting while SB sports it's own unique features, for me it's not really all that original because I;ve already played a game that has quite a bit in common, to you who has completely not known anything of Starbound, i totally would expect it being original to you, to me not so much. I'm not getting that last point though.

If the closest game to it is a retro styled indie title, then it means that there are not many (if any) AAA developers making games like it. Which is good because it means more diversity and as I said 2D and 3D experience are not the same. 3D Mario and 2D Mario co-exist because they both offer something different. Essentially even if NMS is very similar to Starbound, that is more valuable in terms of diversity then it being similar to Battlefield 4. I would like to see more games where there are very few comparisons at retail.

You're citing only AAA devs and yet the devs behind NMS arne't exactly AAA devs, they are indie devs given some funds from Sony due to the flood they suffered which damaged a lot of their equipment and progress, it may look AAA to you but it's still an indie game that isn't on the AAA level of say GTA, Fallout, Final Fantasy etc.
