Right, its not the same thing. The only thing they have similar is you hit people to win.

Its like saying Forza and Mario Kart are comparble because you race.

No, it's like saying Forza and Mario Kart are both racing games.

Which they are.

Games can fall in the genre and be very different.

I imagine Zelda and Assassin's Creed fall in the same genre. Yet very different experiences.

Why do people even compare Nintendo games to other traditional games? What I like about Nintendo is they are unique.

If you want a guaranteed way to win every game of Smash, buy Cloud.

Cloud? That's a weird way to spell Bayonetta

I think with 4, they've create a new interesting standard in not just fighting games but in crossover games in general. Although Project X Zone and its sequel can boast a huge crossover cast, Smash 4 appears to be more significant due to its mainstream appeal and the characters that take part in this crossover. Cloud, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Ryu, Sonic, and Bayonetta in a game featuring some of the most popular Nintendo characters ever from the new and old generations is mind boggling. Some of these new character reveals have broken the Internet, especially Cloud and Mega Man (Ryu would've been great as well if it weren't for the leak). This is probably the closest thing (along with Project X Zone) to the ultimate celebration of video games in general with the variety of stages, trophies, music, etc.

They're comparable as competitive fighting games, even if they are very different.

I guess.

Exactly, their only real similarity is you hit people competitively. There are other games like Smash Bros, they generally suck though.

Arcade fighting games is a different thing than what Smash does.

The fighting genre is broad as is the sports genre.

Honestly, I'd argue the fighting game genre is on the rise. SFV, KI, and MKX have all picked up a good bit of popularity, and Smash is as popular as ever in both the Melee and 4 scenes.

I won't say what's the best fighting game but imo what sets Smash apart is the set up in it, you have a load of mechanics that the player is left up to their own ability to utilize in a sand box fashion. This leads to a metagame that constantly rotates in each of them where the is no set approach to playing the game.

In other fighting games you have an overall system that all characters bend to it's design while Smash is the opposite where you pick the character and bend the system to how you want to play due to the sandbox like approach to the mechanics. Just yesterday in another thread we're looking at the Bidou tech that is now being explored in S4 and people are finding crazy uses for it, this is much like in Melee when people began realizing the potential of the mechanics.

Before I was skeptical on Melee's longevity but looking deeper at the series with the type of metagame the Smash games have and the sandbox like design to fighting I can see these games being competitively played in big tournaments for decades.

It really is.

Having played (and loved) Pokken Tournament, I started to realize how much Smash is untouchable as the best fighting game of today. You see, as good as Pokken is, there's also so much wrong with it.

The thing with Pokken, and all other fighting games today, is that there's just way too many situations where you're not in control of what's going on.

For example, when you're getting combo'd, there's nothing you can do - all your inputs are completely useless. Meanwhile, in Smash, even if your opponent hits you with a true combo you can't get out of, you still have some control over your character through DI.

In Pokken, there's several aerial moves you can perform - however, when you're hit by an opponent's attack that sends you into the air, you can't do anything until falling to the ground. In Smash, if you're in the air, you're free to do any aerial option regardless of how you got into that position.

In Pokken, when you're knocked down, you're forced to do a normal getup and will never be punished for it. In Smash, when you're knocked down you can getup straight up, rolling backwards or forwards, or getup attack - and that's not even considering the possibility to tech -, and every option can be read and punished by your opponent too.

In Pokken, when you use a powerful move (which is not limited to synergy bursts), both you and your opponent have to watch the move take place through a very lengthy cutscene. In Smash, there are no cutscenes - nice moves are nice because they're hard to execute and hit with, and are done always during gameplay.

I could go on and on, but the point is: as much as I loved Pokken, it still doesn't nearly match up to Smash, which is nowadays the only fighting game that doesn't suffer from these issues. Smash is 100% pure fast-paced gameplay, with all players in full control of their characters and actions at all times, and that's why it's so good.

Exactly.

Conventional fighting games are stuck in their definitions. The perfect thing about Smash is that even if your at a high damage and by all account should be dead, you can still hang in there.

I'm a Peach main and I can regularly keep my self up to 200%+ damage in Melee. That's the equivalent of having negative HP in your street fighters or ur killer insticts, so really there is no comparison. The very fact that you can keep yourself alive through shreer willpower alone is unique to the series.

Obviously its an opinion on whatever you want, but the fact is that no other fighting game comes close to giving the player that much control, which is why I like it. Sure its fun to wail on some one with Ryu or Dormamu or Dante, but at the end of day the specatle is a huge part of it. I will say that Smash 4 is moving toward the specatcle as well but that's to be expected its a current gen game after all, but its still based in the fundamental do it yourself philosophy.

I think the OP's opinion is based on the modest sales of SFV thus far.

MKX however has done well and KI appears to be a great success.

Smash 4 online fucking blows. Lag, no ranking system, and you can only play omega stages. Are you kidding me? How can the online be that bad? It's really not that hard.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

Melee was and is the best.

So it's kinda on decline. Although the new one is leagues better than brawl.

I LOVE ICELAND!
