I think with 4, they've create a new interesting standard in not just fighting games but in crossover games in general. Although Project X Zone and its sequel can boast a huge crossover cast, Smash 4 appears to be more significant due to its mainstream appeal and the characters that take part in this crossover. Cloud, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Ryu, Sonic, and Bayonetta in a game featuring some of the most popular Nintendo characters ever from the new and old generations is mind boggling. Some of these new character reveals have broken the Internet, especially Cloud and Mega Man (Ryu would've been great as well if it weren't for the leak). This is probably the closest thing (along with Project X Zone) to the ultimate celebration of video games in general with the variety of stages, trophies, music, etc.
