Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: It's OK If PC Gamers Don't Want An Xbox One

What do console wars have to do with anything?
Of course gamers want a successful console as that means better support, more care given to the version of the games that runs on that console. That's simple fact. You can already buy a convenient Steam box, yet that's not what console gamers want. With exclusives going multi platform some of that quality and care for the console version may be lost. With the closing down of less succesful studios some variety may be lost, and thus some of the identity of the console.

MS is not turning the gaming industry in what it used to be. Their trying a new walled garden with the windows 10 store. How it used to be was MS flight sim, Age of Empires, Asheron's call, Dungeon Siege, Crimson skies, Rallisport challenge, etc on any version of Windows and some on Mac.

They're not trying to build the XBox brand, they're trying to build the Windows 10 store. XBox brand and console play second fiddle to that from now on. They're retreating from the console war to step right into the online store war.

It's OK if PC gamers don't want an XBox one, it's not OK if they don't want Windows 10. That's the new message.

Windows 10 Store is the gaming side of MS.  In other words, you purchase a game on Windows 10, your increasing Microsoft's profit. The more popular Windows 10 store becomes, the more money MS gets.

Its Microsoft's way to increasing Windows 10. The better they look on paper the bigger they become.

Fixed. This is easily what it could become or what they're working towards. Wins 10 store absorbs xbox brand and just sells the games as win 10 games.

I think bringing every X1 games to PC would say, "we don't care what machine you use, but we want you using X1 or Windows 10."

Personally, I'm fine with that. X1 games wouldn't be less enjoyable because WIndows 10 users have access to them.

Quantum Break on X1 isn't gonna lose signficant number of sales being on PC. The reality is more people will play it because its on both platforms.

So Microsoft is basically devaluing the Xbox brand by bringing their exclusives to PC ...

That's NOT OK to the Xbox brand since it gives less incentives in the end ...

That's a feeling people have, but its NOT reality.

People primarily buy 3rd party games on X1 and PS4. Why do people primarily buy the games that don't give their console its identity? Hence, its a silly argument.

If anything, I would hope putting games on both WIndows 10 and X1 increases the budget for funding games.

How so ? PC gamers wouldn't buy an Xbox One if the game existed on PC ...

Yes people buy HD twins for 3rd party games but exclusives count as an incentive for buying the said platform ...

Yes it increases funding for future games but at the end of the day it's one less reason to own a platform if you have a PC with DX12 support ...

I don't think a signficant number of PC gamers are gonna buy a X1 or PS4, period.

MS games can still be an incentive for people to buy a X1 even if they are on PC. They can also be used as an incentive to get people to upgrade to Windows 10.

So everyone else benefits aside from the Xbox brand ?

@Underlined Maybe to play with their friends but for purely single player experiences like Quantum Break, nope ...

I also don't think many PC gamers play on consoles since multiplayer games are more of their style but there are some PC gamers that prefer single player experiences so to them a PC is just some halo box that delivers better on better technicals ...

No because Xbox still has a place in the living room. There selling more games which will lead to bigger and better investments for the next console and store updates. Remember a console is aimed for the casuals. a PC isnt. Though casuals still game on PCs, not many of them will plug there PCs in the living room to play Xbox games. In fact i know no one that does that. Not even me and im huge on PC gaming.

Xbox is MS's gaming devision. So where ever XBox games sell, will increase MS profit. Xbox is not a side line company that you think it is. Its a devision created on the insides of Microsoft.

Depends. Maybe X1 games coming to Windows 10 encourages support. Maybe MS puts more funding into software. That can benefit Xbox.

You're out of touch with the average consumer. The average consumer isn't gonna buy an expensive PC to play the same games a cheaper X1 is capable of. Perhaps you think the average consumer is gonna shop around and build a PC?

Again, its different market for the most part.

Consumers don't have to buy an expensive PC, they can always opt in for lower settings ...

I dont get what is the problem with this?

Isn't it good that more people can play these awesome games? Its not just restricted to XBOX ONE or Microsoft / Xbox fans!
