Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: It's OK If PC Gamers Don't Want An Xbox One

Dr.Henry_Killinger said:

If MS wants PC gamers why not just offer a better service?

Its bizzare when you think about it.

MS could create something at par with Steam's service with a fraction of the m oney they've put into Xbox.

Because MS wants to be relevant in PC gaming but never supported it properly. Avid PC gamers believe MS is simply giving them some games and will stop support. Look at Halo, Gears and Fable. PC gamers never got the entire series of any of those. They got a taste and were forced to buy a Xbox for more.

If I was going to make a list of why people buy Playstation over Xbox, this PC thing ranks very low on the list.

Why aren't they buying Actvision, EA, Ubisoft, or Japanese publishers? I'm not sure if I understand the question.

Microsoft is ALREADY relevant in PC gaming since every PC developer uses the DirectX standard so what do they have to fear about losing PC gamers ?

Not making PC gamers buy an Xbox is just a lost opportunity for Microsoft in the end ...

@Bold If Microsoft wants to win they need to lure gamers all around so why aren't they buying these publishers ?

Xbox keeps looking unattractive and more so after what just happened recently. Phil Spencer's leadership or lack thereof will be what drives Xbox into irrelevancy ...

Windows is an incredibly successful gaming platform, but MS's gaming support for it has always been half assed.

You misunderstood, the concern isn't developers will move away from Windows. PC gamers want to support MS to support Windows gaming better. Hence, they don't want Windows Store to be another GFW. Also, don't use Windows Store to tease some Xbox content.

They don't need to buy publishers, MS needs to make a store worth supporting. I don't blame Phil for that, his power is limited.

So Xbox is a sacrificial lamb in this ?

Phil Spencer is wrong from the perspective of the Xbox brand, this is NOT OK ...

A missed opportunity is lost potential ...

I don't understand how you came to that conclusion.

In a nutshell, PC gamers wants MS to support Windows gaming like a real platform. Not as a Xbox sampler.

I don't speak for all PC Gamers, but I think most PC players just want to play their games. Rather than helping Microsoft make Windows more intrusive.

I think bringing every X1 games to PC would say, "we don't care what machine you use, but we want you using X1 or Windows 10."

Personally, I'm fine with that. X1 games wouldn't be less enjoyable because WIndows 10 users have access to them.

Quantum Break on X1 isn't gonna lose signficant number of sales being on PC. The reality is more people will play it because its on both platforms.

I think PC gamers will avoid Windows Store when they can (at the rate things are going). But, they will use it when it has games they want.

Gears of War:UE is the second best selling item in Windows Store right now (just behind Minecraft). While RotTR is 14th, I think people who want that are buying it on Steam.

Of course it’s ok not to buy an Xbox. The Xbox console is there for convenience, there clearly not focusing about selling the most consoles in a generation, they seem to be caring on the more important factors and that's building the Xbox brand into something even bigger then it is now.

The only ones who are hating on this are those that care for console sales and wars. What would fanboys talk about now that Xbox isn't going to be in there arguments anymore? They’re going to be force to talk about the games quality now because that's all there going to have. Xbox games vs PS games. The way it should be. Not “This console sold 1.5m this month compared to your console that sold 560k on NPD”. And “woah 1080p>900p, I see a major difference and I can’t play anything under 1080p because it hurts my eyes”. I always questioned how those gamers played games last gen lol. Hopefully we will be comparing game stories and gameplay elements that actually matter now that XB1 is becoming more a choice then a must.

MS are turning the gaming industry in what it used to be. About the quality of the games. By removing this console war garbage we have today which tends to only talk about visuals and sales. Once all this is in place, we are going to be talking more about the games again. (Yes there were always console wars, my favourite was the Genesis vs SNES era. Compared to today that war was sensible.)

What do console wars have to do with anything?
Of course gamers want a successful console as that means better support, more care given to the version of the games that runs on that console. That's simple fact. You can already buy a convenient Steam box, yet that's not what console gamers want. With exclusives going multi platform some of that quality and care for the console version may be lost. With the closing down of less succesful studios some variety may be lost, and thus some of the identity of the console.

MS is not turning the gaming industry in what it used to be. Their trying a new walled garden with the windows 10 store. How it used to be was MS flight sim, Age of Empires, Asheron's call, Dungeon Siege, Crimson skies, Rallisport challenge, etc on any version of Windows and some on Mac.

They're not trying to build the XBox brand, they're trying to build the Windows 10 store. XBox brand and console play second fiddle to that from now on. They're retreating from the console war to step right into the online store war.

It's OK if PC gamers don't want an XBox one, it's not OK if they don't want Windows 10. That's the new message.

Windows 10 Store comes under the Xbox devision which looks after the gaming side of MS. What Windows 10 gains, gains under the Xbox tree. In other words, you purchase Xbox game on Windows 10, your increaseing Xbox profit. The more popular Windows 10 store becomes the more popular Xbox Brand becomes.

Its MS's way to increasing Windows 10 and a way to increase Xbox sales. The better they look on paper the bigger they become.

So put every Xbox title on PC then ?

Which one is it ?

MS is essentially pissing off two camps at once.

Console gamers want the console to keep its identity and perks in the form of exclusives.
PC gamers want MS to support Windows and not just a limited version locked behind the windows 10 store.
And that XBox sampler fear is rightly justified from the past with a bit of Halo, Gears and Fable on PC but not the rest.

Then they close all these extra studios, so more games is apparently not the answer. MS is trying to court two different camps with a shrinking pie.

I don't know what was so wrong with the old model. Release a special custom build console version first. Port to PC with some enhancements half a year later. And the old PC exclusives in the form on flight sim and age of empires etc.

But I guess the share holders are dreaming of owning a store like Steam and easy money with huge selling games and merchandise like Minecraft. XBox One isn't growing fast enough to become a good enough online store, and those studios that don't make profit like Halo are not that interesting. XBox One hardware might be next, why bother with the effort and risks of building a competitive box when an app can do the same. Money is in services nowadays, not in making things. Which is ironically what keeps XBox One alive, XBox live is the lifeline of the console. As long as that is profitable and they haven't found a way yet to get PC gamers paying into it, XBox One will be safe.
