I don't think he was trying to make a logical argument.  I think some people are alarmed by the hype for PSVR.  And this arugument is just a hail mary pass.

Are we being completely down to earth here?, because I don't think we are.

Its pretty nutty to assume VR will not be popular/ will die off. However, it is completely sane to say that it will take a while to catch fire.

This is MOTHER FUCKING VIRTUAL REALITY FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!!!!! This is the beginnings of the shit we've been dreaming of since Tron. The whole point of the most popular genres of video games is to place yourself into a different role, a different universe, to experience a story. What better way to do this, then immersion? I mean why did 5.1 and 7.1 Surround sound take off... (which costs a hefty penny) and still has demand years later?

The paranoid argument about someone robbing you while you have a headset on is rediculous. There are MANY MANY MANY activities that people do that distract them from the apparent ever present threat of someone breaking in and kicking your dog. Raze tried to counter and claim that you would have your alarm system on -- but doesn't realize ... you can simply arm your alarm while you are "full diving" too.

Beyond gaming -- think about virtual reality porn when it takes off!

This is my take on it... I see it taking off 6 years from now...

I find it nutty to assume it will be everything and be super insanely popular. There are still parts around the world that don't care about TV let alone video games, we can't exactly call them nut jobs because they are different from us.

We dreamed of VR for decades and even then the last time we had a good amount of VR hype and that ended up going out with no bang. I'm of the observse and wait pov because it could very well go under or it could do well enough, even then it will still take years to mature. What I find more interesting than VR is an actual holodeck, in fact that's what quite a few of my mates said some years back when OR prototype was announced and even some I see today.

I don't know why you threw in the robbery while wearing the headset part. I never specifically mentioned chances of someone getting robbed while wearing a VR headset.

I feel VR will be more widepread than just mere porn, it has more fields of use than just games and porn tbh.

Fair enough, lets move on.  I saw your comment about the Vita TV and I understand what you are getting at but at this point, there is tremendous  support for PSVR.  Its Sony, yes, but more importantly, its the dozens on developers that are currently making games for it.  Thats the point.  To me  thats what you should be looking at.   And that isn't just for PSVR.  All devices will need support.  THe move didn't recieve developer support.  Neither did Kinect.

Love the House of Cards reference btw.

No problem, just making sure we were on the same page is all.

Yes we had a good amount of VR hype before, but the tech wasn't ready.
Compare it to LaserDisc and analog HDTV. We've had HDTV since the 90's (1035i), MUSE Hi-vision Laserdisc (650i) launched in 1994. Too early, too expensive, too bulky. Same as VR in the 90's. Now HDTV is everywhere.

I think the tech is currently good enough for mainstream adoption. Sure it's 'only' dvd quality for now, yet that was good enough for a decade (still is for many) HDVR will come later.

And yep there can be many uses. Camera phones are getting better all the time. Imagine getting a call from your friends on holiday that want to show off the surroundings, put on your headset and look around where they are. Google earth already has 360 degree views from all over the world. Documentaries made for VR are sure to catch on. The next big BBC earth documentary for VR, yes please.
Maybe the home fitness industry can find a few uses, train anywhere you want on a stationary bicyle. It's already been done https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKHEoCN0Nmg

I have to disagree here, the tech is not currently good enough, it has too many resolution and FOV limits, add in the price tag and I think the best you can hope for is mediocre success at this stage. we are still a few years off the tech being cheap enough as well as good enough for mainstream adoption.

having said that even though I think the OP's topic is dumb as it has no chance in my opinion of being true. MS are in an excellent position at the moment, They have partnerships with Oculus as well as their own AR and kinect technologies. Should it prove successful they can easily bring something rapidly to market that improves on whatever Sony does, being first to market is not always the best position to be in.

VR will not become a hit.

But even if it did become one, it might accelerate the Xbox downward spiral a bit. Won't be that important either way.

Are you suggesting that a downward spiral is nothing to be concerned about.

It's definitely something to be concerned about for Microsoft. Their market share is slipping away and I don't see what they can do to come back. I don't think a successful VR preipheral would be what spells doom for them in the end. Other things will do that.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Next Xbox (PC) will have native oculus support regardless

I think that, with the current prices of VR devices, they are in no hurry. They could be ready by the time the technology is available to the masses.
