Yes we had a good amount of VR hype before, but the tech wasn't ready.
Compare it to LaserDisc and analog HDTV. We've had HDTV since the 90's (1035i), MUSE Hi-vision Laserdisc (650i) launched in 1994. Too early, too expensive, too bulky. Same as VR in the 90's. Now HDTV is everywhere.

I think the tech is currently good enough for mainstream adoption. Sure it's 'only' dvd quality for now, yet that was good enough for a decade (still is for many) HDVR will come later.

I have to disagree here, the tech is not currently good enough, it has too many resolution and FOV limits, add in the price tag and I think the best you can hope for is mediocre success at this stage. we are still a few years off the tech being cheap enough as well as good enough for mainstream adoption.

having said that even though I think the OP's topic is dumb as it has no chance in my opinion of being true. MS are in an excellent position at the moment, They have partnerships with Oculus as well as their own AR and kinect technologies. Should it prove successful they can easily bring something rapidly to market that improves on whatever Sony does, being first to market is not always the best position to be in.
