Um, isn't this par for course for MMOs?

Not at all.  Par for the course is not unlocking access to the new areas included with the expansion.  What Destiny is doing is changing the goalpost for getting into specific content and thus locking them behind the expansion.

Last week you needed to be level 28 (been a while, might have been higher) to do the Nightfall strike.  You can hit 28 in vanilla Destiny.

Today, Nightfall strikes are now level 40.  You can only get to level 40 if you have the expansion.

If you don't buy the expansion, you can no longer access the content you could access last week.

With destiny, all of my respect for Bungie has been lost sadly.

If I had Destiny, I wouldn't stand for this.

Yes expansions leave players without it behind on new content, but it's never taken away content they already had access to.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

You don't have The Taken King.

You are locked from the end of the game content.

It is fine.

Far from fine when it is content that I was able to access without it the day before.  The expansion has actually devalued the original.  No game that I know of, ever, has done this.

The end of the game content is locked until you buy The Taken King.

Why? They increased the end of game content level that can only be reached if you have The Taken King.
Why? The end of game content needs to be at the highest level.

But the maps and pvp modes I played last week? They unlocked it for only one week to you have a taste of The Taken King.

So which content you don't have access? Tell me... what modes or events you can't play anymore?

Here is a list:

  • Daily, Weekly heroic and nightfall missions are all gated off. Now it's not to say that these won't cycle through to older missions, but bungie seems to have set the new game to 'only level 40' mode, so who's to say that next week won't be undying mind with a level 40 requirement slapped on it?

  • All Vendor gear is now locked, old vendor gear is gone completely and I'd assume unobtainable. The only gear that you can buy is from your vanguard mentor- uncommons with few perks and only some with 170 defense ratings.

  • The vanguard legacy playlist is a shadow of what the old vanguard strike playlists were, providing paltry rewards and seemingly no legendary gear- compared to what you could do two weeks ago.

  • All "kill objective" missions while patrolling lead to Taken, who you are unable to kill due to the high level difference. This effectively renders them unbeatable unless you have a fire team member who owns the expansion.

  • crucible now only lets you select between random 3v3 or 6v6 match types, which is paltry compared, again, to what you could do two weeks ago.

  • Level select on missions is gone, you can only do the mission on the default difficulty- this devalues content even as there are legacy quests being re implemented to give gear with 2.0

  • the wandering wolf packs are gone, along with being able to level up queens wrath (at least I haven't found any way besides grinding the story missions endlessly).

  • Doesn't seem like there's a way to earn legendary marks, so you can't purchase planetary materials. Back to farming Venus for some more spirit bloom, then.

  • all Eris bounties are gone, and her item selection has been culled (so that's what, half of the dark below?)

Fact is now, Bungie and Activision cannot advertise vanilla Destiny as the same game it was last year.  They would actually have to advertise it as LESS than it was for anyone looking to pick it up.  That is a fact.  Any amount of posturing and preference does not change that fact.  With all games that have expansions, I have never in my life seen the expansion remove my ability to play a portion that was in the game before the expansion.

It is even worst if you think some things like ToO got avaiable if you bought the DLC House of Wolves, and now you can't access it anymore.

They literally used content to sell DLC 4 months ago, and now revoked the same content.

lol Destiny is turning to a Joke
