Forums - Gaming - DLC as an offset to higher gaming development costs?

DLC, particularly on disc DLC is used to earn revenue from the cheapskates that buy used only. It's the only way to ensure that they get SOME sort of revenue from these people.

That said, I completely agree with and condone pre order or buy DLC like Goro.

I am a firm believer that anything created before release should be accessible on disc for everybody at release price.

So... day 1, on disc DLC, is to get money from people buying it used? Despite it not even being possible to buy the game used at that time?

If it was actually included for people that bought the game new and only cost extra for those buying used I wouldn't have such a problem with it. But why punish people that buy new because of those that don't?

I got Goro free. Not really punishment.

Look at it this way. Pre-order usually means full price. people who pay more (instead of waiting for a sale or price drop) are rewarded.

Alternatively, as long as the base content is strong, is just purchasing a higher tier product.

How about developers not piss away money in the development process? So much money gets wasted when devs go for looks over a good game (Crytek and Sony), when they spread the development team across all seven continents (any AAA Ubisoft game released in the last 3 years), and most importantly, just taking too damn long to finish the game (Duke Nukem Forever and The Last Guardian). How on earth does a game like Crysis 3 cost $66 million to develop when the game is nothing more?

Anyway on-disc DLC to offset development costs is a stupid move because as development gets more expensive, DLC gets more expensive, and it will get to a point that it just isn't worth it anymore. If someone wants to profit off of an expensive game, they need to cut costs at the source rather than nickel-and-dime consumers.

How about budgeting properly and controlling your expenses?

No, the devs have just become greedy and want more money.

Well that would be easier if they knew how many units they will sell.

I'm fine with DLC when its just stuff like more multiplayer maps, more cars in racing games, costumes, or other insignificant content. But when they put significant story related content behind an additional pay wall, that's gross.

On the disc DLC is absolutely disgusting. You're paying for the disc and everything on it should be included for that price.

Off the disc DLC depends on how it is done. If it's day 1, then it's terrible. If it's for something that should have been in the game in the first place, terrible. Stupidly expensive, terrible.
However if it is a decent amount of content, the price is reasonable and it is clearly something that was made in addition to the original game (and NOT as a part of the game that was ripped out to be sold separately) then it's a brilliant idea, more please

There is no way to know if devs are just holding back dlc that is already finished when the game is released. I mean we've all heard stories of devs finishing games then going back and looking at what they can cut out and add as dlc for a later date.

The real problem is that gamers are too entitled to let the price of games scale up like they should've. Games cost upwards of $80 in the cartridge era; the only reason they ever dropped to $60 was because discs were cheaper to make and it became a selling point. Games should've risen to $70 last gen and should be $80 now. If they were we'd be much more likely to get finished games at launch this gen.

And yes, I know Australians complain about paying $100+ for games, but their minimum wage is somewhere near $11 if I'm not mistaken, so everything is scaled up like 50% anyway. America is most of where this entitlement is (coming from an American).

OT: Since gamers can't accept that the prices should be higher, yes, DLC makes up for it in my eyes. If we can't accept to pay full price up front we deserved to be scammed out of the rest later.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Yeah, I have a friend who paid 20 dollars for the Krypt unlock in MKX. I told him I'd never spend that type of money just to unlock the Krypt. He said he didn't care, it was "only 20," and it was quicker to unlock everything that way. So, given that he's spent 250+ dollars on DLC for Dead or Alive 5, I didn't even bother trying to argue that supporting that was only showing companies it's okay to lock a bunch of stuff in the game (like the old days) and charge 20 dollars to unlock it all. Reasoning and logic isn't a strong suit of his... And, I can't figure out why that is. The guy has no problem getting in your head. Of all the fights we played, I won but a single time.

Just stubborn as hell.
