Forums - Gaming - Is Yooka Laylee Proving Publishers Should Have Faith in 3D Platformers?

The status quo is that third party publishers don't invest in platformers and the genre isn't even up for consideration. The only exception are movie and cartoon tie-ins, but that's obviously not what we are talking about here. The part of your post that addresses the OP realizes what the status quo is, so yeah... I am increasing my post count and that's it.

lol ok we're in agreement but in your initial post you align this to an "anomoly" which sounds as if you're saying there isn't demand for platformers because that is the sole component we're looking at regarding this kickstarted, demand.

Publishers will view this as an anomaly, rather than actual demand that should be pursued further. That was my point. While gamers will look at it as proof for the viability of 3D platformers, publishers will shrug it off as a one-off thing.

You're ignoring the upcoming Trine 3 and Splatoon (singleplayer) though. There's also the R & C reboot coming up and Sly might get a new game to tie in with his movie. Oh and Tearaway.

But Nintendo owns platformer genre so Rol wasnt including Them and Trine 3 is just 1 out of thousands he's mentioning.

Trine 3 is an indie game, all the others are first party productions and none of them have enticed third party publishers to make similar games.

And it looks better than loads of retail games. First party companies are still publishers, some of the biggest in the industry in fact. Nintendo hasn't made a non-Mario 3D platformer in quite a while. So I hope this and the possible success of Splatoon can change their minds. You can see Good-Feel wants to try their hand at 3D games with the 3D hubworld in Yoshi's Woolly World, at least that's what I take away from it.

I want a 3D DK platformer.

The fact we went from way too many 3D platformers to basically none beside Mario shows how one-dimensional most AAA publishers are. They don't do things by half - either we have a hundred a year or 0. It's good to see a game like Yooka-Laylee get this kind of attention. I personally prefer the Super Mario Galaxy type platformer to the collect-a-thon type, but both have their place and there is a massive shortage of both right now. This will certainly be a day 1 purchase for me providing it's a quality product.

I love this kind of game, but I fully accept there is NO reason for a major publisher to take on this kind of project. The audience is very limited.

The Kickstarter being a success on its own terms doesn't change anything. The only campaign that should make publishers think differently is Star Citizen.

Yooka-Laylee is going to blow Star Citizen out of the water in terms of funding.

I don't know if you're joking or not but Star Citizen has nearly $80 million in funding.

I only looked at kickstarter.

The design meeting bonus sounds like a scam. It's a video conference where you get to input ideas into a problem solving process, but what's the bet they just humour the backer, act interested, or ask them easy questions they know the answer to.

Now that's a signature!

Unless the game gets like 20 million pounds, publishers won't care.

The game has 19k backers now, let's go crazy and say the game gets 10 times the backers it has now, that means around 190k (this is waaaaay too much, considering Might No.9 had 67k but lets go all crazy).

Will 200k backers change the mind of a publisher? of course not, a million might, but no lower than that.

Actual sales is what matter, if the game (when it comes out) gets 1 million+ sales, then yeah some publishers might try to play around with 3D platforms more.
