Forums - Gaming - Is Yooka Laylee Proving Publishers Should Have Faith in 3D Platformers?

I think it's proving that not every game needs to be a multibillion dollar triple-A franchise juggernaut with grade-A production values to attract consumers. I think it also proves that we really don't need publishers for this kind of game now and should probably stop asking them for them.

The main issue here has never really been "can these games make money", it's been "can they make more money than these other, big budget games"? And the answer is no, except when that big budget game flops horribly and the company loses millions.

Games like Halo, Call of Duty, and Uncharted would scoff at Yooka-Laylee's paltry $1 million in 24 hours.

And Mario laughs at Halo and Uncharted.

I love it how people try to spin this KS project as underwhelming.

How much would people pay for spiritual successors of those games? Not much. ;)

I guess you didn't look at the WiiU's Mario numbers.

It's not proving anything. This game is being funded by the community and most likely will be very short. But let's wait to see if it gets released in the first place.

I gues you didn´t look at Mario numbers. Mario 3D Land: +10 milions on one console, Super Mario Galaxy: 12 m in one console

And New super Mario on Wii was.... 28 milions, again, in one single console. Even with 9.5 milions of users 3D world sold +3 m and NSMBU around 5m.

Wii's number is only because of the casuals and the bundling. Look at the WiiU Mario numbers - they won't come close to Uncharted 4's or Halo 5's.

So you cherry pick instead? Dont count Wii but WiiU? How about SM3DL like he said 10mil+? Thats in this gen and wasnt bought up from casuals and had no mass bundling.

I think we surpassed the Uncharted franchise lifetime sales already. ;)

Uncharted is small fries compared to Mario. Also a safe bet that these 3 titles combined cost less to develop than Uncharted 4.

I'm comparing like with like. That makes sense, right?

Tbone no more arguing with Lawlight. He only leads to bans.

Sonic Colors did well on the Wii yes.

We both know why Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom failed.

And Project Spark is also quite the bad game. That framerate alone...

And Knack actually did sell a lot for such a bad game. The difficulty in that game felt unfair a lot of the times and the combat is shallow. In fact Knack isn't a platformer, but a beat 'em up game. Thanks for proving my point that people automatically call any cartoony looking game a platformer.

Sonic Generations did even better, which shows there is still an audience for good Sonic games outside of Nintendo platforms.

I'm sure Project Spark runs fine on PC with a solid video card. The X1 version doesn't run great but certainly playable. Anyhow, that doesn't reflect the gameplay. I hear people are actually enjoying Conker on Project Spark.

Knack is considered a 3D platformer and beat em'm up. I'd say the same thing about God of War.

Basically, an old school 3D platformer isn't necessarily what people want even if Yooka Laylee is a success. That game is running on hype. People don't really want something that feels like an N64 era platformer, those games don't hold up well.

I honestly thought your first post was sarcasm lol.

It was! But you gave a serious response so I gave some serious answers.
