Forums - Gaming - Is Yooka Laylee Proving Publishers Should Have Faith in 3D Platformers?

The design meeting bonus sounds like a scam. It's a video conference where you get to input ideas into a problem solving process, but what's the bet they just humour the backer, act interested, or ask them easy questions they know the answer to.

Putting some gibberish sounds from you in the game is 5x the price of that. I would therefore expect one's input in the meeting to be 5x less impactful than that. Seems about right.

I would just read as "pretend you're part of the game for £675"

I think it's the people behind the game and their high quality output from before that has gamers clamoring. I think a publisher would be interesting in THIS game, but likely not many more for now.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Assuming Playtonic didn't have MS, Sony, Nintendo, or other publisher approach them before the Kickstarter, absolutely yes

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I think Knack already proved people want 3D platformers.

Also, everyone is talking about Conker on Project Spark.

Those Sonic games are also doing well on Wii, right?

Sonic Colors did well on the Wii yes.

We both know why Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom failed.

And Project Spark is also quite the bad game. That framerate alone...

And Knack actually did sell a lot for such a bad game. The difficulty in that game felt unfair a lot of the times and the combat is shallow. In fact Knack isn't a platformer, but a beat 'em up game. Thanks for proving my point that people automatically call any cartoony looking game a platformer.

3D platformers are unlikely to go back into vogue. There might be one or two a year (like the skylanders and other shit), but publishers will likely go for the mainstream stuff.

Excitement around Yooka Laylee can be attributed to the legacy of Banjo Kazooie and not a prevailing demand for 3D platformers.

It only really proves that publishers aren't trying to cash in on nostalgia enough. Remove all mention of past games and developer references and we'd probably be looking at a much different picture. Actually, we probably wouldn't be talking about this at all.

That's like saying we wouldn't talk about a Souls game made by some unknown team instead of From Software.

Well duh, these developers have proven themselves, so we put more faith in them.

The premise of the OP is that this kickstarter proves that a significant number of people want more 3D Platformers.  I'm saying it does not prove that point, but rather that people want this game made by these developers.  It proves that linking a project to classic IP can garner attention.  That's not the same as proving there is a potential goldmine in the 3D Platforming genre.  Do you understand what I'm saying now?  I don't know if I can make it any more simple for you than that.

Sonic Generations did even better, which shows there is still an audience for good Sonic games outside of Nintendo platforms.

I'm sure Project Spark runs fine on PC with a solid video card. The X1 version doesn't run great but certainly playable. Anyhow, that doesn't reflect the gameplay. I hear people are actually enjoying Conker on Project Spark.

Knack is considered a 3D platformer and beat em'm up. I'd say the same thing about God of War.

Basically, an old school 3D platformer isn't necessarily what people want even if Yooka Laylee is a success. That game is running on hype. People don't really want something that feels like an N64 era platformer, those games don't hold up well.

I honestly thought your first post was sarcasm lol.

The Ouya proved that being successful on kickstarter means nothing. Though looking at everything and so hoping this game actually releases because it looks super cool, I only hope that it has indeed given publishers faith in 3D Platformers.
