Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer - Virtual Reality Not Yet 'A Thing'

If it turns out that VR isn't going to be nearly as popular as people made it out to be and it becomes another version of the kinect/move I wonder if those people will ever show their faces again lest they eat crow.

I just don't see VR being a main player in gaming, I see it as a peripheral that stays on the sidelines than taking over everything else.

I find it funny though because MS isn't in on it like Sony and Valve are and suddenly they really should be because follow the ring leader.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

MS are researching the technology but I agree that it isn't going to be huge for many years, if at all.

I agree with him but even in a few years when the technology is finally there to make it happen, will the games be ready for it?

Sure, VR will be awesome for some games like FPS and racing games, but what about the other genres? How will it be to play a third person shooter, an adventure game, a RPG or a platformer with those headsets?

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

so basically what he is trying to say is "yeah its interesting, but its not important", in an indirect way. if VR actually becomes a success MS are gonna be in a really bad place, because while VR isnt a "now thing" its right around the corner, and the big dogs arent fucking around when it comes to it, Valve, HTC, Facebook and Sony are gonna be going all in.

Yep , that sounded really down played.

Xbox is gonna be left behinde when it comes to VR compaired to sony, basically just got comfirmed.

"Sure, VR will be awesome for some games like FPS and racing games, but what about the other genres? How will it be to play a third person shooter, an adventure game, a RPG or a platformer with those headsets?"

who cares if not all game genre are suited  for it?

If it turns out its the best way to experiance a FPS, and the market takes off while MS is just twiddling its thumbs waiting on others to see how things turn out... its going to be behinde from the get go.

"I agree with him but even in a few years when the technology is finally there to make it happen, will the games be ready for it?"

Its looks like the technology is here.... now, not a few years away.

Its just a matter of hitting the market with the right price & a good game to go along with it,... and you ll lunch the start of a new way to experiance gameing.

VR could be big, if such a wave was to hit the scene, you would want to be ontop of your game for it.

I doubt you will see many people claim VR will come out of the gate and take the world by storm, but this is a technology that will establish itself as a viable alternative (regular TV sets will still be the standard) for experiencing video games, movies, TV, educationals etc, yet it will probably take a decade or maybe longer to do so.

I think it won't be picked up as quickly as the first Kintect was.

"I think it won't be picked up as quickly as the first Kintect was."

Maybe not.... mainly because of price.
However I can see much higher potential in VR than Kenect.
(I think VR is a much more desired product)

Hell I can even see VR+Kinect working out well.

Why not have virtual limbs/hands, in a VR enviroment? based on your actual arm/hand movements?
(again this wouldnt work for all types of games, very few, but could be neat).

Lots of really neat things ahead, with VR.

No big surprise, considering that Xbox One is not powerful enough for VR anyway.

I can actually even tell the exact date and time when, according to Phil Spencer, the state of VR will instantly turn from "not yet a thing" to "biggest thing ever":

it will the very second that Microsoft announces its first _own_ VR solution.

VR is dumb, the technology has been around for over 20 years, there is a reason it has never caught on.

Touchscreens have been a thing for decades too, yet it wasn't until relatively recently that they become so popular. You'd almost think that the viability of something can change as the technology and manufacturing process improves :p

I don't know if VR is at the point where it could become mainstream (i haven't tried any of the recent builds, nor are we certain as to how cheaply it can be done right now), but we've gone from the almost universally despised Virtual Boy to things like Oculus and Morpheus receiving tons of praise and consumer interest.

If the interest and praise for VR continues to increase as the technology becomes more advanced, cheaper, less invasive, and gains more developer support, we could see it becomes very popular (or perhaps it'll never get that far). We really don't know yet, so it's a bit silly to state definitives right now.

If sony popularizes VR with Project Morpheus, it will be become a "now thing" and MS will be behind on it because Phil didn't take it seriously.

That's what I've been thinking of VR..

Not yet, but it will, someday
