Touchscreens have been a thing for decades too, yet it wasn't until relatively recently that they become so popular. You'd almost think that the viability of something can change as the technology and manufacturing process improves :p
I don't know if VR is at the point where it could become mainstream (i haven't tried any of the recent builds, nor are we certain as to how cheaply it can be done right now), but we've gone from the almost universally despised Virtual Boy to things like Oculus and Morpheus receiving tons of praise and consumer interest.
If the interest and praise for VR continues to increase as the technology becomes more advanced, cheaper, less invasive, and gains more developer support, we could see it becomes very popular (or perhaps it'll never get that far). We really don't know yet, so it's a bit silly to state definitives right now.
