I never cared enough for the DS to buy one, only Nintendo HH I didn't buy.

So do I.

Agreed, that makes the library of the 3DS even more awesome.

The DS also has 15x the installbase than the Vita, but less than double 85+ games (38vs24 if I counted right, Shovel Knight will push it to 38vs25 this week). If all is said and done, the number of 85+ games on Vita will be a lot nearer to the number the DS has. So being sold THAT much less, but still has such an awesome library? Why that? ;) |
Easy question to answer. DS had a really high install base, so a lot of shovelware made its way to the system to ride on the DS' momentum. In reality, the number of systems sold will not directly relate to the number of critically received games developed. The Vita may have less units sold, but it certainly has a demographic down that the 3DS doesn't have as much of a grasp on. That's why you see many games on the Vita and not on the 3DS, despite the 3DS having sold many times more.
If I had to decide between DS games and 3DS games, it would be a hard decision.
The 3DS games are much prettier of course. But DS had (so far) more of my favorite games: the CING games (Hotel Dusk, Last Window, Another Code), 999, 4 Professor Layton games, 6 Ace Attorney games and 2 new Zelda games.
Outside of 90+ scores (though that becomes 4 vs 6 in favor of the DS if we exclude small digital titles), the 3DS is still a long way from catching up to the overall critical acclaim of the DS's library. If we extend the range to 75+ it becomes 107 vs 233 in favor of the DS, and for 80+ it's 57 vs 119.
Linear metacritic comparisons are a bit silly though :p

I was expecting a thread with this title... lol. Yes, 3DS is an amazing handheld. I didn't really like the DS back then. There are a lot of reasons: worst Zeldas in a handheld, I don't remember a standout game like A Link Between Worlds, or Fire Emblem in the 3DS... The DS has a ton of great games, but I enjoy much more the 3DS.
Target audience. DS' is broad and mixed whereas 3DS is not. Its main audience are actually gamers.
I get what this thread is getting at, but as a response to this and the other threads;
I've had more fun with 3DS than I had with DS. It has more games I liked better.
In fact, I fell it's still the only 8th Gen console that actually brought anything memorable to the table (though I get that it's still the early days for the home consoles while 3DS is starting it's final phase) and I'd say it's the best handheld since the GameBoy Color to me. Maybe even the best period, which is quite the achievement and I wouldn't give any home-console the slightest chance of doing the same in their category. DS though obviously had some amazing games, but I feel it is overrated.
