I'm sorry for this, but no. RPG elements you're referring to are just the common thing RPG's have, but not what defines RPG's itself. As one other has already pointed out, RPG stands for Role-Playing Game. Break that down, you see "Role-Playing." I'm sure you know what role and playing mean by themselves, and if one will modify the other what that has to mean. Yes, it means the game has you playing a role. I am sure you realize that this suddenly makes RPG's actually quite a bit more broad, which is why we come up with all these other terms to further narrow it down. Overlapping of genres is inevitable, because they are pretty much simplifications to help identify something. Calling Zelda not its own thing is incorrect, because Zelda was not made to fit an archetypal genre. Many games are actually its own thing.
While you may argue I'm arguing semantics, you were also arguing over these very same semantics.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Well, you play a role in nearly every video game. Foloowing that definition Mario or Doom are Role Playing games. The video game role playing games follow the pen&paper-rpgs (and these were created before video games existed), so I would say the main thing is that you as a player create and develop a character. Link is always the same, despite who plays him. So Zelda is not a Role Playing Game (it's an action-adventure actually). The character in Demons Souls is formed by the player: looks, stats, weapon or spell choice, class and so on - Demons Souls is a RPG.
| Bobbery said: From Wikipedia: "A role-playing game (RPG and sometimes roleplaying game[1][2]) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.[3]Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.[4]" First sentence: Player assumes the role of Link in a fictional setting. Check Second sentence: There's structured decision making and character development. Check Third sentence: The developers put in rules about what items solve puzzles and beat bosses. Link may fail if he does not use the right weapon on a boss for example. Check Just because you can't make Link a mage or a healer doesn't mean it's not an RPG. An absence of detailed character customization doesn't disqualify it from being an RPG. Also who cares lol. Sometimes I think people just think the Legend of Zelda is too good to fit into any genre. |
Full second sentence: "Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development."
I marked the important part, that that you left out conveniently. The decision-making for Link are not made by the player, but by the game developer. Or can you ditch Zelda and side with Ganon? Just playing a fictional character is not enough, that matches nearly every game. So second sentence: nope. Zelda is no RPG, it's an action-adventure.
No, unless you count Zelda II, but that's more of an Action RPG along the lines of the Ys series.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I agree, A Zelda-RPG would be really cool. Also I agree about Hyrule Warrior, I saw it as a filler game, but it turned out to be a lot of fun.

As I see that you as many here refer to RPG as the player is steering a character (but not actually deciding about the character), do you really say this is an RPG:
