Nintendo might be a good developer and would probably create good mobile games ... if they would actually do that. As far as I read about this, Dena is making the games using Nintendo-IPs.

Nintendo will no doubt have input and they won't be crap products. DeNA and Nintendo are aiming for things that sell like Candy Crush which has 100 million daily users.
Honestly though even a garbage Mario iOS game would sell more than like 95% of the smartphone apps out there.
It's not so much about quality, it's about making games that are simple and addictive. If they can do that they will make an ungodly amount of money.
Actually though I don't think we expressly know who will be making the games specifically, I think Iwata said it would differ on a case by case basis. Like its not like Nintendo makes all their own games in house either. Like Mario Party is made by an external company. Mario Golf/Tennis are. Hyrule Warriors is. Xenoblade is. etc. Even development of things like Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D is farmed out to external companies. Even the core development of Super Smash Bros. 3DS/U was made at Namco, not Nintendo intenernally. I suspect Nintendo will operate with DeNA in a similar way.
| Shadow1980 said: Mobile gamers are a fickle bunch, and no one company has managed consistent long-term success so far. Rovio is in decline as Angry Birds has passed its peak in popularity. A report from last year suggested that Candy Crush is waning in popularity, so King may follow Rovio before too long. If PopCap doesn't follow up PvZ with something equally big, EA may shutter them. But for every Rovio, King, or PopCap, there's literally dozens of other failures. The mobile market is littered with the corpses of countless failed developers, few of which ever made anything that lasted. It's a fad-driven market, which doesn't lend itself to franchises that persist over time, and those who play exclusively on mobile don't really care for for the kind of games that are popular on Nintendo platforms. They want the simplest and most casual games. Not that most of Nintendo's biggest games would translate well to mobile in the first place. If Nintendo is going to be making mobile games, they should keep that a small segment of their overall business, and focus on only their most casual gaming experiences like Brain Age and Nintendogs. They shouldn't be wasting money on making smartphones, either. When Apple alone is selling well over 100 million phones in a single year and Android-based phones selling far more than that, I somehow doubt a phone made by a company known for their video games will ever be more than a blip in the overall smartphone market. They should stick to dedicated gaming hardware. |
Nintendo has so many more IP options than a company like PopCap does though.
They can make
Mario Run
Mario Party
Mario Dance
Mario Angry Birds knock-off
Mario Kart w/tilt controls
Mario Maker
Mario Baseball
Mario Basketball
Mario Strikers
I mean you get the idea ... just from Mario alone they could make like 50-100 different app variations. Then they can move on to Kirby. And Zelda. And Pokemon. And Nintendogs. It's really endless the number of games they could make if they really wanted to.
I'm guessing all they will do for mobile gaming is using it do advertise to the casual market. Make smaller games on all their IPs and then the ads will be from themselves advertising their consoles. EX: The first Fire Emblem game is brought to smartphones, then ads will appear as (Try the new Fire Emblem on our Nintendo *insert console name here*) Something like that.
