Seriously?  And you don't see many casual farmville types buying into the hardcore gaming sphere...what does that make them?  Not able to commit to a challenge?  Weak willed?

That just makes them casual.

Then call me ignorant because I don't think Splatoon looks interesting at all (I really, really can't be arsed with CoD either, not since Modern Warfare). The gameplay looks slow and uninteresting and the whole concept just doesn't speak to me. If they were to release something like Timesplitters on the Wii U; I'd eat that up in an instant but I don't think will appeal to the vast majority of shooter fans and it has more to do with mechanics and concept and less to do with its cartoony style and people being mentally uncapable of appreciating different things (Borderlands is also cartoony, same for Team Fortress 2 and aforementioned Timesplitters).

(Oh, and someone mentioned "CoD" and "tactics" in the same sentence; I just have to add that this is ridiculous thinking, CoD is 100% twitching and frag chasing, there are literally zero tactics involved, which is among the main reasons it doesn't interest me in the slightest. )

This whole "if you don't play what Nintendo is offering on their platforms; there's something wrong with you" schtick is getting a bit tired from where I'm sitting, I'm sure people could be saying the same about other franchises on other platforms. This, paired with the "PS4 is winning only because it's the "it" thing and nothing else" takes me back to the "Wii is a fad for soccer moms and children" days, it really does.

PS: I think everyone should just let CoD players do their thing, stop them poluting the voice chat in other games...

I wasn't saying people who don't like Splatoon are ignorant.

Anyways, like I told someone earlier, I'm not claiming to know absolutes. Obvoously the situation differs from person to person. And I also wasn't just talking about Nintendo games. People can like what they like, but I'm just saying that it's the case for many people out there that they feel like playing CoD makes them more "manly" than if they were to play something like Tearaway. It's just how the world is, since it expects us to just mold into these antiquated archetypes rather than doing/liking what we want.

or maybe games like Tearaway arent being played because people dont know it exists, but thats not as grabbing as saying people are too manly for it. please

So you're saying people don't know that LittleBigPlanet, Zelda, Rayman, etc. exist?

Look, I'm not the only one in this thread saying that CoD players won't want to play this game because it's too "kiddie". Everyone knows this. I'm done trying to justify my response as if it's some insane assumption when this is known and accepted by most people.

There is a lot of stigma in gaming for sure; every sunday I take the kids at work to an internet cafe where we play games together for a few hours. The place is almost always at least half full and there are many kids there, the youngest ones play Call of Duty while the ones from ages 16 and up usually play Counterstrike, Battlefield, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm or Starcraft, almost all games that require actual thought and tactics, I find this very interesting. The average CoD player is probably in the 12-20 age group, so I agree that many would be opposed to the idea of a "cartoony" game.

Which is a shame for them, many great games are cartoony or goofy in their visual style, Timesplitters series, Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands series, as mentioned, all qualify for this. I think the main problem for a game like Splatoon is that it doesn't have that immediate and obvious hook that games like CoD does; they have grand displays of epic explosions, hardcore music and fast-paced action gameplay and so it is made to be showcased and forever remain shallow.

I'm saying that people are not aware of those games as they are COD. You can tell that by just looking at sales and advertisment for COD versus all those games you just listed. COD has more brand awarness, period

and im not just talking to you but anyone else who used the kiddie argument. Or are people really going to tell me that those games are as well known as COD?

Exactly. This is all that I am saying. Stigmas have plagued the gaming culture, and while I think it's getting better over time, this isn't the way it used to be. Cartoony games used to be the norm and people weren't judged for playing them, but now they've lost their appeal in many ways. Mostly due to the younger generation gravitating towards "hardcore" and "mature" experiences.

While those games are cartoony in their own right, I wouldn't say they're full cartoon. They're like a mix of realism and cartoony features, sort of like Zelda U's style. And yeah, I agree. Splatoon isn't as obvious as CoD is, so I feel that it's not really something that appeals to casual players, but rather its own niche.

let me ask you though

what about nintendo fans that claim that sony and microsoft generally only produce brown and grey shooters?

do they have a problem with their masculinity too or is it only an issue in the other direction?

These Nintendo-fans exist and they are stupid. But generally hating about Splatoon without deeper knowledge just assuming things (wrong) like the strategy component doesn't make you look any better.

No, because sadly Nintendo will never ever make an advertisement campaign for it, or the Wii U ever.

There is a quote by C.S. Lewis that goes as follows:

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

One of my favourite quotes, and descriptive of an attitude that's sadly very prevalent in the gaming sector.

It's prevalent in the gaming sector, because gaming hasn't reached all demographics yet, it is mostly common for children, teenagers and young adults. I'm nearly 40 years old, and have no longer a problem admitting I like Lego-games (although I think there are too much, I don't need to buy every game), while I also like how Bloodborne takes shape.

Not really.
