Forums - Gaming - This generation has sucked so far

So far I enjoyed Destiny, Infamous: SS + First Light & can't wait to dive into Bloodborne when it releases. I think this generation is missing some new IP's & many thought the "jump" in the consoles power would be more evident early on.

It's been decent so far. Wii U has had some great exclusives, but software gaps have been a big problem.

PS4 has been decent too. Hard to judge for me right now, because there is around ten games on the system already out that I haven't played yet, but I certainly haven't been disappointed so far. Not with the overall library at least. Exclusives have been lacking so far. Really enjoyed inFamous and currently enjoying Driveclub, but that has been it so far (though looking forward to playing LBP3 at some point). Rest of the year looks better in that regard. Looking forward to Tearaway Unfolded, Uncharted, Bloodborne, Persona 5 and Ratchet & Clank. Hoping Until Dawn turns out decently as well, and hoping even more that Dragon Quest Heroes comes West.

Worst things about the generation of home consoles so far has been the lack of top quality new IP, and the lack of my favourite genre, the RPG. Hopefully the latter will be sorted by the end of this year. I have high hopes for The Witcher 3, Persona 5 and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Yep, it sucks TO YOU.

People should stop trying to represent the general media, (broken/remasters aside) ive been having a blast with the games on PS4/X1/WiiU

It surprises me how popular the Xbox One and PS4 are considering that there aren't many great games on the system. Bloodborne looks to be a saving grace but that's not enough.

This gen can be summed up as:

- Broken games (Halo: MCC, Assassin's Creed, The Crew, Driveclub). Ridiculous. No excuses for all this crap!

- EXTREMELY underwhelming overhyped games (Watch Dogs, Destiny, COD: AW). Destiny, Watch Dogs, etc. etc. should've been mega hits but instead they are some of the best 7/10 games around

- Too many dang remasters. Enough! It works OK for something like Halo because a) the games are old b) It's like Mario All-Stars but we don't need every flippin game remastered! The Last of Us should've just been a PS4 only title anyway. There are more remasters than actual new installments of franchises

- Nintendo has been a huge disappointment. We finally get an HD Nintendo console and what do they do? Give us a 3DS sequel (3D World), and give us another weird looking Zelda game instead of a cool ass looking Zelda game like the E3 2011 demo.

- Games that had a lot of potential but just seem incomplete. On one spectrum you have The Order, which is single player only but only has 5-8 hours of gameplay (u wot m8?), and on the other side of the spectrum you have Titanfall which is multiplayer only but very barebones (only a few game modes and such)

- No backward compatibility. Instead they want to resale us the older games or get their cloud service instead. Lame! I want to get rid of my PS3 but can't.

Anyone else agree? There are no differences between the PS4 and Xbox One now. Even Sony is charging for online.

I agree.  I haven't enjoyed anything 've played that was exclusive to this gen.  I haven't played any Xbox One games as I don't own an Xbox One, but on the Sony side there's just nothing good.  Infamous 2 was amazing on the PS3 and I expected to be blown away by Infamous Second Son, but except for the amazing graphics, the game was complete ass.  Bullet sponge enemies and a severe lack of content that didn't have me running from one side of the map to the other repeatedly.

After  the disappointment of Dragon Age Inquisition, which is also multiconsole with better graphics, so even because it's from a completely different developer, it makes me kind of wary about Witcher 3.  Inquisition was full of fetch quests that have you go from point a to b and back again, main missions weren't much better and sometimes just as bad, with a boring storyline, something that you'd have expected to be good.  The only thing that was enjoyable was the online but even that started to stale doing the same three dungeons over and over, especially given how unbalanced the different classes were.  You can walk through the missions alone with a leveled up mage class or a Reaver while every other class requires a group to be there supporting them.

I don't own a Wii U but I'll eventually get one.  As a console this gen, it's obvious which one has the most quality exclusives so far.

The 8th gen consoles could have waited until 2018 to release, the PS360 are capable enough to last a long time. The only console that needed a successor was the Wii, and even that system could have lasted a couple more years if Nintendo didn't have abandoned it so soon.

I agree with you about Nintendo abandoning Wii too soon, but you're crazy if you think Sony/MS should have waited until 2018 to release new consoles.

Well, I suppose that's a long time, but I'm sure the PS360 will still get full retail releases in 2018. And from a power perspective, most next-gen games have versions on PS360, and there are very few differences between them. From a sales perspective, the majority of best-selling games on PS4-XBone are in last gen consoles too (Far Cry 4, CoD AW, Destiny, GTAV, Titanfall, Watch Dogs, The Last of Us, Shadows of Mordor...), so much so than other regular selling games from last gen are being remastered too (DMC DMC, Tomb Raider, Saints Row IV...). From that point of view, yes, we could have waited more time so the power difference between systems makes the old ones unable to run the new titles.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Theres been a ton of good releases for the first 15months, more so then probably any consoles before. Lets not ignore that. Problem is that there are also more disappointments (broken at launch/over hyped games), a lack of stand out gems and lack of innovation/games pushing the boundary.

Complaining about remasters is pointless. For every remaster there is another handful of new games, they're not taking anything away from the industry.

I think they are taking away things from the industry:

- Backward compatibility - why have BC when we can just remaster the games? Some remasters make sense. An Uncharted trilogy remaster would be cool. Halo: MCC was a great idea (but poorly executed). But The Last of Us should've been a PS4 game in the beginning. If it wasn't for all these remasters then we might have had at least exceptional BC. Instead we got none.

- Sequels - Instead of DMC remaster or Dark Souls 2 remaster we should be getting sequels. Imagine having DMC5 by now instead.

All gens start slowly and then ramp up. 7th gen was the same way, if I remember correctly.

I agree that your pretty miserable if all you ever look at is the negative side.

Also, I'd wait till the end of the year and then maybe say that...

Still a ton of loaded 2015 games, unless they get pushed to 2016

In general, yes, the eighth generation has been unfruitful and has, unfortunately, continued many of the negative trends begun during the seventh generation.

Overproduced and overhyped games are routinely rushed to market. Games are broken apart by publishers and sold piecemeal to consumers. Console manufacturers have removed backward compatibility, opening a window for superfluous seventh-gen ports and "remasters." Video game companies find new and creative ways to nickel and dime their customers, many of whom are so blindly loyal to their console of choice that they happily pay for the privilege.

There are exceptions, of course. Independent studios around the world are turning out creative, entertaining software with small budgets and staff. Nintendo, despite its conservatism -- or, perhaps, because of it -- provides its fans with backward compatibility, a free online service, and some truly great games.
