Forums - Sales - Wii vs PS4

PS4's only chance is long term, if this gen lasts as long as last and we get a boost in the middle like Move/Kinect provided. That's unlikely though.

It was never gonna compete with Wii's 20m+ years.

Move boosted PS3 sales?

Why do people even compare the wii to the ps4, the wii was totally penetraded by casuals and launched at 250$ while the ps4 launched at 400$.

Probably because its nintendo's only one up on sony.

plus every other handheld.

You Know it's bad when a last gen System which was the cheapest out is being compared to the PS4 in Sales..... in order to make up for its current Gen counterpart.

Pointing out facts = butthurt?

Whatever floats your boat brah.

Because pricing doesn't work that way  it is because costs associated with it. At the end of the day, Wii at 250, and PS4 at 400 is what they would be priced at, hell Wii could have been 200 on launch if you most likely want the break even points to line up, but it just means they reflect their value at that time. The reason I say butthurt, is because that is the only excuse, and I use the word excuse, that people are presenting "What if PS4 was priced at 250, it would have outsold the Wii, and it would have....it would also bankurpt the company."

Why are only few sony fans seeing the obvious hole in the argument.

Not sure anyone said, "What if the PS4 was 250?"  I think the argument is more that if the Wii had been $399, even with more power, it wouldn't have done so well.  It had the right balance of power, price, and casual appeal.  Also, one would be foolish to deny Sony could have had a pricedrop to $349 last year and kept the momentum going more than it has, without taking a loss.  However, Sony is focusing on profit more.  Seems to be that way in most regions.  I think UK is the only place where they answered XBO's price cut.  Regardless, it still would have been hard to compete against all the casuals that the Wii brought in in these next corresponding couple of years.  That it did it for a about a year is quite amazing.  And in the end, I doubt the PS4 is going wind up behind the Wii.

At the same frame time, the Wii had Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, the Resident Evil 4 re-release, Zack & Wiki and Super Paper Mario; very huge games indeed. PS4 has The Last of Us, GTA V, Rayman Legends, Inquisition, Black Flag, Diablo III, Second Son and something else.

Choose your games, but I think Corruption outshines every game in both platforms.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Its very unlikely any console will match the sales rate of the Wii. In its time it was a juggernaut. PS4 never really stood a chance. Wii was a cultural phenomenon. While PS4 is a seller among the gaming public, its not in the public eye the way the Wii was.

The whole PS4 was 250, was a result of similar thread to this one, where the defense is that PS4 is only behind because it costs more. Of course it costs more, it has more in it, it has the price because the components in it is higher compared to the wii.

By the way I do think the PS4 is the better hardware when compared to the competition, software has yet to be fully realized compared to current and past consoles, but I believe that will be fixed by the end of this year and should hopefully be leaps a head by year 3.

Also I don't mean to take anything away from PS4 sales from the past year either, and I believe in the very long run, PS4 will beat Wii. However in the short term to middle (3-4 year range), Wii obviously will have advantage.

Now I must return to Dragon Age on my Ps4!

I definitely agree with you that the PS4 wouldn't be the PS4 at $250.  Well, unless Sony wanted to take some big losses early on.  Still, you can't deny that the Wii would not have been as big a hit as it was if it had been priced at $399, but with some extra power under the hood.

if by the end of 2017 PS4 has managed to stay within 15m I think it is assured a victory.

Well it will pass it (wii in the long run), If not that is a scary thought. Still very much doubt it will reach ps2/ds numbers without Japan being as strong as it once was, even with the Europe/Other making the different.

I agree the only way it could not reach 100m is if this gen is very short.  However I'm not with most people in that the earliest I see PS5 launching is 2019.
I also think PS4 was made with such off the shelf parts it will be able to get to $200 and then $100 quickly compared to PS2 which will help its long term sales.  PS3 would be much closer to passing Wii if it would just come down in price by now.  A $150, $200, $250 setup would work best.
