Comparison launch aligned (more or less, PS4 has a two week advantage)

PS4 fought bravely to keep the lead after its first full year (was beaten because of christmas week though).

I believe second and third full years will be no contest, Wii 2008/2009 sales are crazy.

This might become interesting again in 4-5 years.

Errr, wait. PS4 has no two week advantage. The Wii has 2 1/2 month advantage.

Not sure what you mean...

Here in VGC : First numbers for Wii : Week ending 11-25-2006. First number for PS4 : Week ending 11-16-2013

I counted 0 for the first two weeks of the Wii in order to compare similar weeks. If you aligned both launches perfectly, Wii would have like 600k more...

The Wii had amazing sales in its first 3 years. I can see the PS4 doing 15-20m units this year (more like 15m to be honest) and while I think it will eventually sell 100m, it's not going to blaze past Wii sales exactly. Right now the PS4 is selling good but not spectacular and there's no guarantee it will sell as well as the PS3 did in its later life. My current prediction for PS4 lifetime sales is 100 million units, about as much as the Wii did.

I guess we can all hope that China will have a greater impact than most of us believe. For all three companies. As the Japanese market is shrinking it would be great to see a rise in South Korea and China.

IMO its better to be the system that sells at a high level consistently on both the hardware and software side as sony has done its entire 20+ years in the biz. As opposed to being the wii which was a one off gimmick machine with limited 3rd party support whose causal fan base was both its greatest strength and its primary reason it fell off the map sales wise down the stretch of last gen.

To make matters worse the wii-u could never come even remotly close to duplicating its previous gen success....i mean the ps3 is beating not just the wii as it has been for many years. Its also beating the newer wii-u here and again and that is what coming up on 9 yrs after its launch even with the ps4 going gangbusters.

I mean the release of the Wii in Japan December 2nd. PS4 release in Japan was February 22nd. So why 2 weeks advantage?

Ok,

We can say PS4 has a two weeks advantage in the west and the Wii has a two month and a half advantage in Japan. Considering Japanese PS4 sales so far, two month and a half would be something like 200k at best (15-20k a week). That would mean the way I am doing this gives something like a 300-400k advantage to PS4 overall (which is not a big deal at all in this case though...).

no add up all those Wii numbers in Japan from those 2 and a half months you're cherry picking the side that helps you the most.

Help me with what ? lol

Ok, I did add Wii numbers from those two and a half month and that is 1.6M. So what ? Do you suggest it is more accurate to say Wii has a 1.6M advantage in Japan in this comparison. Because I it is not. That would be considering that PS4 would have sold the same amount as Wii if during those 2.5 months which we know is wrong.

Estimating the number PS4 would sell in this time frame is the right thing to do imo. However, I did a mistake by not realizing those 2.5 month includes christmas. My 200k estmate is too low then. Based on 2014 numbers PS4 would have sold something like 300k (excluding launch numbers which are included later in the graph).

So overall, we miss two weeks of Wii sales in the west = 450-500k. We miss 2.5 months of PS4 sales in japan = 250-300k.

I still believe there is a slight 200k advantage to PS4 the way I am doing this. And again, I really don't think this is a big deal...

Why do people even compare the wii to the ps4, the wii was totally penetraded by casuals and launched at 250$ while the ps4 launched at 400$.

The value of $250 in 8 yrs ago dollars is closer to $300+ today.

Besides that, the comparison is obvious.  PS4/Wii are the leaders of their generation through 15 months of their release.

so are real income.
