Well it will pass it (wii in the long run), If not that is a scary thought. Still very much doubt it will reach ps2/ds numbers without Japan being as strong as it once was, even with the Europe/Other making the different.

I agree the only way it could not reach 100m is if this gen is very short.  However I'm not with most people in that the earliest I see PS5 launching is 2019.

Hey, I'm with you on that one.  In fact, I think that would be the perfect time to launch it, since it will mark the PS's 25th anniversary.  I can imagine the ads.  It first shows PS5, then the S flips and turns into a 2 to celebrate 25 years. Or vice versa.

I think MS will try to launch early, again, and if they haven't bowed out by the end of this gen, since that helped them with the 360.  However, the PS5 will most likely be more powerful, but just like the PS4 and unlike the PS3, it won't be very expensive at launch.  Another $399 launch price, but probably 4x-5x as powerful as the PS4, would be perfect.

yeah I think it'll be later this time but given the larger install base of PS4 going in compared to the competition and I think they'll have grounded themselves to that price in order to not lose it all again.  Hopefully Cerny designs again.

Even if he doesn't, I think Sony knows never to go mostly customized chips, now.  That was a Kutaragi thing, anyway.

Why do people even compare the wii to the ps4, the wii was totally penetraded by casuals and launched at 250$ while the ps4 launched at 400$.

And why, PS4 nope?

I also think PS4 was made with such off the shelf parts it will be able to get to $200 and then $100 quickly compared to PS2 which will help its long term sales.  PS3 would be much closer to passing Wii if it would just come down in price by now.  A $150, $200, $250 setup would work best.

Yeah, I was thinking about this couple of days ago  and I think it's possible we'll even see micro-console digital only version of it by the end of the cycle (maybe on 7nm node) which would boost sales even more.

The value of $250 in 8 yrs ago dollars is closer to $300+ today.

Besides that, the comparison is obvious.  PS4/Wii are the leaders of their generation through 15 months of their release.

Comparison launch aligned (more or less, PS4 has a two week advantage)

PS4 fought bravely to keep the lead after its first full year (was beaten because of christmas week though).

I believe second and third full years will be no contest, Wii 2008/2009 sales are crazy.

This might become interesting again in 4-5 years.

Part of me hopes the PS4 does eventually beat it, because that means the cosole base is not shrinking, but expanding.  Good for everyone.

It may beat it in the long run as Seece mentionned previously. But it will depend on how long this generation is. It will also depend on Nintendo next move in the home console field (system doing well? flopping? competing with PS4/XBO? doing something completely different?)

That said, I think the chance for the console base to expend this generation is very low. So far, sales wise : Wii on top of PS4, XB360 on top of XBO, PS3 on top of WiiU, DS on top of 3DS, PSP on top of Vita...

Errr, wait. PS4 has no two week advantage. The Wii has 2 1/2 month advantage.
