Translation:
Games get worse and worse and we simple cannot give crap games a score like 8/10 anymore. Its getting to obvious. Today's 8/10 games were 7/10 games 5 years ago and 6/10 games 5 years prior to that.

So before we reach a point where even the dumbest people finally understand that the reviews dont make any sense we decided to drop the score system.

Pretty much.

People claim that reviewers are harsher this gen, but if you ask me, it's more that game quality had degraded, and continues to degrade.

Good on them. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. A summary is much more informative in terms of purchase guidance then a score ever will be.

sometimes a game is not essential or recommended, sometimes a game is a 6/10. and a 6/10 is not avoid, essential or recommended.


If you read the reviews you'd know what category it falls into for you personally.

Nice change.

And a brave one too, this could hit their reviews viewership.
I mean, just look to the number of people in this very thread that didn't read the article at all and criticized about 6/10 getting a "recommended". People just want to read the Title (or the score) and act based on that.

And this is a somehow core gaming environment. Many gamers just won't invest their time into actually reading.

We will avoid updating reviews

Regularly updated reviews might seem like the answer to changing circumstances (and changing games), but we don't believe they're helpful to readers. So we will avoid updating our reviews unless there are extraordinary circumstances. We will always seek to publish the most authoritative review we can to begin with - delaying it if need be - and include reasonable assumptions about the future development of the game in our assessment. If a game changes radically enough over time, we're more likely to consider a full re-review than an update.

I really like most of what was said in the article.  But I don't get this.  Why are updates to reviews not helpful for the reader?  That doesn't make any sense and it is not explained.  It will be interesting to see how many games actually get a full re-review in this system.

The comments here show the real flaw of the industry and to an extend of the entire society in consumerist countries... People don't take the time to read and get informed, they want two bites fast food information on the go... They want everything in their life in 140 characters or less.. And after they come at you and complain, cause it wasn't clear enough, not fast enough not tasty enough.. And cry that their lives are stale and meaningless...

Anyway I think it's a good thing but people need to start getting informed and not just surf over information, seat down, relax and dig in there is a world to discover one word or one image at a time...

The funny thing is that they're actually just changing their scoring system. They've said they want to get these on Google

Good summary of what's wrong with this. I've felt Eurogamer have been getting a bit full of themselves recently
