Forums - Gaming - Eurogamer drops review scores, withdraws from Metacritic

This is very good change in my opinion. Now people will need to read reviews instead of only the score, which to be honest was borderline useless anyways since most outlets only used the 7-10 scale and due to that many gamers look at a score like a 7 and equate it to 'junk'.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

I give their decision a "Meh" badge.

Like it or not, they have replaced their 0-10 ranking with their own 0-3 ranking (and if I had to guess, Avoid is 0-5, Nothing is 6-7, Recommend is 8-9, Essential is 10).

They will still get criticisms over which badge was given to which game, but I guess you will get less "why did this game get an 8 while this other game got a 9", since they will both now get a "Recommend".

Which is a good thing. An 8 or 9 game sounds like, "recommended", to me, while a 3 or 4 sounds like, "avoid". Difference is, you have to read the review, to a higher degree, to understand why they said avoid it, rather than simply looking at a "6" and calling the game, "bad."

I feel like it will have the opposite effect.  Before you may have read the review to see why it was an 8 (and not a 9), but now people will ignore anything without a badge, because it could be a 6 or below.

I like the idea of no scores and just a recomendation system. It is the grey area games that won't benefit. Plenty of times you read a review full of negatives and then bam see an 8 at the bottom. Same with positives only to see a 6. I like the change overall though, and think it is the way forward.

I can dig it.

To be honest most reasons you guys are posting on this thread to make this a good thing don't make sense to me:

1) We'll still have bad reviews
2) Metric system is still there, just a crappy one
3) I don't care if not having scores will make others read the whole article or not. Seriously, I care if I read it not what others do.

Personally I like metacritic. Sure it doesn't necessarly mean I'm gonna like a high rated (btw "an" or "a" before high?) game or dislike a low rated one. But being an average of several of the mains reviewers out there, it's the closest we'll have to the game's real quality.

This is great! All sites should follow suit.

Interresting concept

A four choice system is too limited imho. Plus idk why people assume that viewers who just scrolled down to see the scores will now read the reviews. They'll just scroll down to see the recommendation.

Reviews having scores isn't the problem. The shitty logic behind scores and the elimination of pretty much everything under a 6 or so, is the problem. Back when magazines like EGM and Gamefan were around, a 6.5 could still be a very good game. Nowadays a 6.5 is pretty much considered trash. Hell, even a 7.5 is like.. average or something to most people it seems.

Fix that, don't take scores away imho. They were off to a good start in some situations this gen, too.
